Kean on the brink at Blackburn Rovers

BLACKBURN Rovers manager Steve Kean was on the brink of the sack this evening.

The Lancashire Telegraph understands club owners Venky’s have been in talks about Kean’s future over the weekend after growing concerns about the team’s performances this season.

Friday night’s dismal 2-1 home defeat to Middlesbrough knocked Rovers off the top spot in the Championship, with Venky’s seriously considering relieving Kean of his managerial duties.

Co-owners Venkatesh and Balaji Rao are understood to have long wanted a new manager but it is now believed club matriarch Anuradha Desai is ready to give them the green light to execute the change.

Kean was expected to hold talks with Desai in an attempt to persuade her he is still the right man to take the club forward and back into the Premier League, but was not expected to be given a reprieve.

The Scot has been written off several times during his managerial tenure and Rovers fans will know nothing is certain until his dismissal is officially confirmed.

If Kean was dismissed, his assistant Eric Black is expected to be offered the caretaker manager role, and given an opportunity to prove himself.

Global advisor Shebby Singh was spotted at White Hart Lane yesterday, for Tottenham’s Premier League visit of QPR, with Rovers’ 1995 Premier League winning skipper Tim Sherwood also believed to be in Venky’s minds for a potential future coaching role.

The owners and Rovers officials were remaining tight lipped today as talks continued about Kean’s future.

This is not the first time Kean has been facing the sack, with him having survived numerous crisis moments during his disastrous 21-month regime.

He was given a stay of execution during summer talks in India, despite heavy pressure being put on chief decision maker Desai from large sections of the club’s hierarchy.

He has also survived an almost constant barrage of abuse from angry Rovers fans, who have watched him oversee the club’s drop out of the Premier League.

Venky’s are understood to be alarmed by dwindling attendances at Ewood Park this season and fear this won’t improve with Kean as manager.

They have also taken a close interest in the team’s start to the season and have been far from impressed by performances, despite picking up results.

Kean was surprisingly appointed Rovers boss in December 2010 after Sam Allardyce was inexplicably sacked by Venky’s with Rovers sitting in mid table safety.

Rovers survived relegation on the final day of the season, following a poor run of results, but their downfall was sealed 12 months later as Venky’s kept faith with Kean.

Large sections of Rovers supporters have protested against Kean for more than a year, with many insisting they won’t return to Ewood until he departs.

Only worry is the lack of mention of a replacement being lined up to replace him. They need to get the buzz back about Ewood - not sure Black would do that.

I hate to say it but being a Blackpool fan it has been nice to see B'burn doing so badly and also that it's a shame that we have to wait 'till December until we play them as Kean would've gone and the club would've brought someone better in. But I'm impressed with the way Rovers fans have dealt with it, I think that as soon as the attendences reach below double figures (considering Kean is still in charge by October 6th (V Wolves)) then the effect would be drastic, financially. Blackburn fans deserve at least the Play-offs as a reward for their endurance this season and last. Best of luck from the Seaside.

If this is true then I just hope that we get a proven manager in to replace him and not another run of the mill coach who thinks he can take it on. Thus I hope the rumours about Tim Sherwood aren't true. Roberto Martinez would be my first choice followed by Ian Holloway.

Oh i really hope that this is finally the death knell of Keanocchio's stewardship! It has been a long time coming if it is! I know that the Rovers faithful have not seen eye to eye with regards to staying away/attending games but in my opinion the ratio has been spot on. I have mentioned before now that the 'stay aways' have driven the attendances down and those that have gone to Ewood have taken the protest directly to the Bald Baffoon! We shouldn't be arguing as to which way is the right course of action because i firmly believe that they are both right! I have chosen to stay away myself but i applaud the so called 'Spartans' for making themselves heard calling for SK's head. Let's forget the past arguments, unite as one and be ready to fill Ewood to the rafters once a new man comes in.... whoever that may be..... he'll be better than the present incumbent!

We know you like going to football RU but read the artical. Venky's are business people (although not good ones) and are alarmed in the drop in attendances or possibly the poor performances not a bit of booing. We booed all last season and it got us nowhere. The boycott may have done it but let's just all be thankful it could be over by tomorrow and we have ALL got what we want.
Who cares so long as he gets sacked, I'm not bothered if its because he's made a pass at mrs desai so long as hes sacked thats good enough for me.
One things for sure, he won't have been sacked if Danny murphy made a pass at mrs desai as it would have been his first this season.

Venky's, an experienced manager is a must....

In my view, Mick McCarthy would be an excellent choice. He achieved promotion with Sunderland and Wolves on a limited budget and took the Republic of Ireland to the 2002 World Cup.

In addition his experience, he would bring organisation, honesty and real credibility back to the club.

Venky's, please do the right thing. Line up an experienced manager such as McCarthy, and then swiftly dismiss Steve Kean....

If a new manager comes in, Kean might be shifted to first team coach so it might not get much better. Or Shebby might have impressed Venkys so might be made manager. In other words I hope for the best but still expect the worst. Kean out is the first step though, so I've got everything crossed.

Correct....clear the decks!! If the new manager wants Black as part of his plans then fair enough. But I would pay Hendry's and Kean's taxi fare to get the hell out of there. Sherwood would be equally unpopular with the fans. He has often put the club down and was allegedly behind dressing room unrest during his time at the club....just because Shebby Singh has worked with him on ESPN does not mean he is the man to manage the club....who next? Steve McMahon??
.
I cannot see much further than Mick McCarthy tbh. But, he is his own man and must be allowed to manage the team as he sees fit...and that includes transfer policy!!

Then again, I'll believe all this when I've seen that maggot-ridden gone....not until!!

And at least Kean's nice suit will come in handy for his court appearance when Big Sam takes him to the cleaners.

To be honest, I don't think it matters whether we play great football or not.

Under Souness, Hughes and Alladyce our style of play wasn't the most pleasing on the eye. However, we fought for everything, pressed the ball, and ultimately got results.

We need a manager who has experience of getting teams out of this very tough league. Someone in a Sam Alladyce mould, and I think Mick McCarthy is just the man..

Or Alan Curbishly, if he comes out of his (self-imposed?) managerial exile?

Good news for a change. I hope the wounds between fans now starts to heal. I have a feeling all this in-fighting has cost us at least two and maybe even three thousand fans. Hope I'm proved wrong, but I don't see more than 15,000 rising to 17,000 for big games turning up this year. Just hope they don't give the job full time to either Black or Shebby. Please whoever is going to pick the new manager think long and hard this time, and only take ADVICE from proper bonafida professionals who actually know the game.

Under Hughsie we played some great football. so you can press and play good football too. But I do see your point. To be honest any manager in the league has a better record than Uncle fester so I'm not that bothered, so long as its not madame venkys cousin or shebby or someone else of that ilk with no experience. In addition his experience, he would bring organisation, honesty and real credibility back to the club.

Venky's, please do the right thing. Line up an experienced manager such as McCarthy, and then swiftly dismiss Steve Kean....
Good call but can a mick mcarthy team play football? Isn't he the irish version of Sam Allardyce. What about Lee Clark? Harry Rednapp?Ian Hollaway, all good managers who's team play on the deck with no hoofs in sight. holloway would be quite cheap as well because Blackpool are poor wage payers.

Under Hughsie we played some great football. so you can press and play good football too. But I do see your point. To be honest any manager in the league has a better record than Uncle fester so I'm not that bothered, so long as its not madame venkys cousin or shebby or someone else of that ilk with no experience. Sherwood would be a non starter for me. I bet Hendry is rubbing his hands at the prospect of getting a chance.
Very true! Kean's record is shockingly bad. I just hope if Venky's do sack Kean, they have a plan in place. Caretaker manager would be a cop out in my view. We need a quick appointment of an experienced manager.

Thats probably the level Venkys will look at. I'd be very suprised if they went for an experienced top flight manager, more like an experienced lower league manager as his wages are cheaper. Thats how Kean got the job, he was the lowest paid manager in the premier league

It's going to be interesting who else gets sacked besides Kean, as he (Kean) seems to have manoeuvred everyone who was pro-kean into positions of power. This could cost Venky’s millions. Their own fault really as they had a perfectly good backroom team already in place.

Firstly im a Everton and swindon fan, i do feel sorry for Blackburn Rovers fans relegation must have been heartbreaking, I know Steve Kean isnt a great manager but i dont feel its all his fault or the majority of it. I personally blame the Venkys. When they came in they Sacked a very experienced Manager in Big Sam who doesnt play the best of football but always guarentees premier league football and a respectable position. They then should have placed Kean in temp charge until a replacement was found but just put him in charge which was not a good decsion as Kean had no experience at a good level of managing especially in the premier league, so he was put in a bad position Kean was. They then said we would be happy with a top 6 finish on a transfer budget of 5mill, what a joke when there are bigger clubs who spend a hell of a lot more, they were in cuckoo land if they though 5 mill could compete with United and city etc. They then say we will buy Beckham, Del Piero, Kaka, Ronahldinhio, Inzaghi which never happened or was never going to happen.

They should have sacked kean last xmas but gave him a chance witch then got you relegated so he should have been sacked at the end of the season. But no they let him start this season which he has done well got you to 2nd and only 1 loss, which some credit has to go to kean and the players he has got in this season such as nuno gomes etc, good signings. i just think why would you sack him now. I do agree overall he should be sacked as the relationship between him and fans will never be recovered and too much damage has been done, I really hope they bring in a experienced manager or a proven manager as you should be promoted this season back to the premier league. I think Mcarthy, shearer, mcleish, brown, burley all on radar or holloway.

I think you should all blame venkys for the way your club is today, I know Kean is at fault for a lot but he should never recieve that abuse he got last year at the end of the day he is a human being and has a family like the rest of us, i just think he was put in a position he couldnt handle but everone of us in keans position then would have taken the job.

I really hope you have a good season and we soon see your great club back in the Premier League where you belong. As long as you dont take David Moyes or Paulo Di Canio i will be happy.

How ironic would it be if that C*** Kean got the sack? That C*** Kean was bragging that we've had the best start to a season for 18 years, and now he could be sacked. Last season, we had the worst start for over SIXTY YEARS, and he keeps his job, and gets us relegated. Then the VERMIN in India allow him to spend MILLIONS on new players, and even give some has-beens like Murphy, at 36, two year deals worth 25/30K per WEEK! You couldn't make this sh*t up.

Proof, if anymore was needed, that this once proud club is being run by IDIOTS!

Klinsman is USA Team Manager and lives in the California sunshine, probably more chance of him playing for Burnley than coming to manage us.

If (and its a big IF still) Kean does get sacked then we need a manager with sound and proven experience in the game.

A manager who has managed successfully at Prem level. (As that is where we are going to be next season)

It is no good getting a promising lower league manager or a coach or an ex player who has never managed a club before. We already had those before (Ince, Kean & Kidd) and it just doesn't work.

The guy we get should have top level and some international experience who can bring stability to the club and then progression and success.

Who does that put in the frame?
Not many are available now the season has started.
Benitez possibly? Glen Hoddle? Ray Wilkins? Stuart Pearce? Would any of these work for the Venkys? Could one of these managers be the reason the Brothers V were in London? Or were they talking to Tim Sherwood?

No Scots in the race unless we could tempt Moyes from Everton.

Could be a Welsh manager? I heard that Coleman could walk away from Wales very shortly but also heard that Mark Hughes will not last much longer at QPR?

Hughesy could be the dark horse in the race, as that would be an appointment that would certainly meet with most fans approval I think. And that may be just what Venkys are looking for right now.

Get your bets on now.....Kean Out (at last)!!!!

We have all known for the last 18 months that Gollum was a waste of space. The Venky's will/should have known this and while they have been reluctent to act, surely they will have a plan in place once they finally swing the axe? IF they do swing it lets hope they have learnt from the past mistakes and get someone who knows what they are doing not some caretaker or backstabber, like they did last time. But if/when they do act lets all forget our differences and unite behind the new regime.

So we can waste half the season and end up mid table? Jesus wept. Get a decent manager in now and get back where we belong. I have the ticket office number on standby to reclaim my season ticket! Klinsman?

Goodness me Mr French RW, SP and GH - Noooooo !

IMO, they(VENKY) should the news be true that the odious one is on the brink then they should appoint a proven manager who can hit the ground running just as MH did or GS, and dare I say a SA type of fellow ?

I just want my Rovers back 1875 boisterously supported by the many. Lads and lassies with smiles upon their faces, and all this ridiculous facade to end. End this letting people cut their teeth at the expense of our history and position in the football world.

Most certainly not Chris Coleman !

The rain is coming down but the heat is on down at Ewood now come on Venky pull the trigger and let us move onward.

Whoever comes in, temporary or otherwise, they should get the 100% backing of the fans until such time as they show they are not worthy.

It is time for all Rovers fans to celebrate and to unite in showing the football world that our cause was just and that we deserve praise for dealing with the situation with passion and patience combined, whether we went to games or whether we stayed away.

Let's not get carried away and give ourselves a reputation for crucifying new appointments before they have had a chance to show what they can do.

We all want an experienced manager with a sound track-record but why would such an individual come to Ewood given the amateurish owners and intolerant fans?

The damage and hurt has been so deep that the rebuilding will need to be handled with skill and will take time.

The owners gave Kean far too much time but I hope that the fans can be patient with any new appointment.

Not sure we want an ex player to come here to 'practice' at being a manager. We've just had 19 months of that.
We need a proper, experienced manager who knows what he's doing.
Mark Hughes came as an ex player with little managerial experience.

Dont worry RR, I actually agree with you and would not want any of those at Ewood. Maybe with the exception of Wilkins? But then I would not inflict BFS on Ewood again - so a big NO to that one RR. :)

I was just listing some of the managers who are either free to come or could be free to come soon. Not sure how big a pool of managers we have to pick from really. Not sure how many from that available 'pool' will want to come anyway? The combination of Venky's mismanagement and the fans well publicised 'doings' may put quite a lot off joining us. I always thought that when and if Kean goes then I would take almost 'anyone' in his place....but now that it may actually happen then I think it is so important to get someone experienced and capable. Cant afford to be testing ground for some newbie....or lower league manager.

This doesn't make sense. These owners are doing exactly the opposite of what results dictate.

Steve Kean is a terrible manager and would of been sacked by any normal club when he was given a raise by these twonks.

Why now that the team is at the top of the pile do they let it out that they want to chop him? This does not make sense.

Is this just a way of getting impatient people back?

Steve Kean said when the season start , he target 16 point after 7 matchs, that dosen't happen - means he should step down. We give full freedom to build a team and play good in all the matchs. The result is good, but the way we are playing is not good, all the matchs we win is like a lucky game. The strong show is done in one match where we win with 5 goals.

But look at the last two games in Ewood, No connection between players in the ground, no game plan of counter attack, no substitution done with midfeild and forward. so how we win with old legs in the attacking time.

Its nice S.Kean give paper to venky and sit in there shop floor. Get a good Football brain manager with reputation, proven results and get on with players soon. Fans will be happy. Venky can act now to slove this long standing issue.

Fans is the key , they are the 12th man in each game, so backing from fans is win win for players(get energy to perform) and management(ticket sales). So I hope Venky will use brain and talk to S.Kean NOW.

Do IT Now, GET back CLUB FANS.

I and others have kept going to the matches and voicing our opinions there (infront of the Venkys at the Hull game), whilst others stayed away and demonstrated at home. We all had one combined goal. Get Steve 'Homer Simpson' Kean out of the club.

I hope IF he finally goes, we can all be reunited in giving who ever takes charge (please be a proper football manager with experience) our full backing. Let's get Ewood rocking again, and Rovers back in the PL.

Come on you blues!!!

Klinsman?

Arte et labore
I do hope that isn't the Venkeys master plan......Re igniting the old management team of Coleman and Kean as his number2...and we think its bad now!!!

Under Hughsie we played some great football. so you can press and play good football too. But I do see your point. To be honest any manager in the league has a better record than Uncle fester so I'm not that bothered, so long as its not madame venkys cousin or shebby or someone else of that ilk with no experience. Sherwood would be a non starter for me. I bet Hendry is rubbing his hands at the prospect of getting a chance.
HENDRY , HE DID HIS BEST TO GET BLACKPOOL RELEGATED TO THE LOWEST TIER, AS FAR AS HIS JOB AT ROVERS AS A DEFENSIVE COACH HE IS TOTALLY RUBBISH , HENDRY THE WORST POSSIBLE OPTION, ONLY REASON HE GOT A JOB BACK AT ROVERS WAS HE AGREED TO DRIVE THE DRUNK DRIVER AROUND.

About time we had some good news, he has had more than a fair crack of the whip. Although he spouts off about tactics and formations etc. he can't set up a team to play properly and we always seem to be going a goal down early on, and have to score three or more before we feel safe in a game. He was found out early on in his reign as a manager for Rovers, you can't fool a Lancastrian, we all knew what type of man he was 18 months ago, and knew he wasn't the right man for the job then. Why is it taking so long for Venky's to realise it.

I just heard on Radio Lancashire Shebby Singh denying that any meeting took place and that it's all a rumour. This is contrary to all the messages coming from the club, so it proves what we have known all along that they are a bunch of lying clueless chicken farmers. It's about time that all you Spartans to realise that you are just prolonging the situation by turning up. Three games is all it wil take to get rid of them, so find something better to do for the next three home games and it will be done. Your view are wrong stating that you are still supporting the team, it's like Germans in WW2 saying they only supported the Nazi party because they didn't want Hugo Boss to go bust who provided the uniforms.

The Mighty Weetabix says...

Do you think Steve Kean gives a toss what you all think ?

I guarantee you that right this minute Steve Kean is laughing at all of you.

He is busy downing can after can of special brew and dancing round his bedroom with Margaret singing "I will survive", his naked body smeared head to toe in barbeque sauce.

Don't ever doubt this is true. It is.
