Steve Kean: His most memorable quotes

Former manager Steve Kean's quotes alienated him from the fans Former manager Steve Kean's quotes alienated him from the fans

Steve Kean’s reign as Blackburn Rovers will be remembered for many reasons, one of which was the quotes that often drove a wedge between himself and the fans. From the wildly over-optimistic to the frankly ridiculous, ANDY CRYER looks back at his most infamous comments...

  • “This is a new era. We have new owners, it is going to be an exciting time for the club. The owners have been disappointed and a little bit confused about the reaction from the press.” After being appointed in December 2010.

  • “It looks like it has brought negative publicity but I don’t see why. I don’t think it has been done just for publicity. If it has fizzled out then it has, but we haven’t been chasing it just for publicity.” On the attempt to sign Ronaldinho in January 2011.

  • “As soon as he says he wants to come back to England you have to throw your hat in the ring.” His hopes of signing David Beckham in January 2011.

  • “We feel that Myles Anderson is a player with great potential as a late developer. He could be-come something of a Chris Smalling, who came through late in football and Myles has done the same.” Anderson is now on loan at Aldershot.

  • “We can look forward and really kick on. We do have lift-off because this was important.” Kean after scraping survival on the last day of the 2010/11 season at Wolves.

  • “Bruno – or Denis after Denis Irwin, the boys call him, because he never gives the ball away – will fill in that position and that is great for us.” After Kean’s words on August 8, 2011, Ribeiro did not play a game all season.

  • “David’s always been put on a par with a young Rooney and he can certainly score all types of goals… it’s not just nice tap-ins, he can create a goal for himself, score from outside the box, chip them in, pass them in, smash them in.” Kean’s praise of David Goodwillie in August 2011 did not exactly come to fruition.

  • “We are very close on Junior’s deal. We have agreed in principle a deal. It’s a long contract. We are confident it will be done and dusted in the next 24 hours.” Hoilett left a year later, having never signed the deal.

  • “The most important thing is 99% of the fans didn't demonstrate.” Kean’s comments about rising discontent among Rovers support on September 17, 2011. One per cent? You are having a laugh?

  • “I didn’t see the plane and I don’t know what it said.” After Rovers fans flew a plane over his head calling for ‘Kean out’ during a game against Chelsea in November 2011.

  • “We won’t get relegated, absolutely no chance.” Kean’s ill-advised prediction in November 2011.

  • “We are in a position where we have forfeited going through and having the chance to reach a cup final.” After Rovers’ Carling Cup loss to Cardiff City in November 29, 2011.

  • “These are challenging times for the club and the owners, but I believe Venky’s are 100 per cent the right owners.” May 9 2012.

  • “I won’t walk away.” September 2012.

Good Good. Steve Kean still a good man and talk positive. We have to respect and players get good boost from such remarks.

Some where down the line, Fans of our club dosn't like him, so thick skin went down the line now.

Full of "positive" always, Even we loose a game , he will find positive from it.
All the best for him in coming years, I feel he got experiance , courage and still he can be a good manager at one of the club in english football.

The problem was Not Kean, it was the people who appointed him to the position, He was a good coach but management of a group requires entirely different skills and tactical awareness to assess the opposition.
It can happen again because the same team will interviewing the contenders. The heartbeat of Rovers was the team headed by John Williams,
Venkeys have been badly advised, the advisors are still there. So it will be same again, some one who will work to the agenda of the manipulators.

What a short list; perhaps the LT are saving space. Anyway, what about the comment "I was forced out" - by whom, and why? Come on SK tell us all - your / BRFC loyal fans and supporters (you know the thousands who e-mailed you with their support) would love to know. As for the rest of
Kean's 'comments' during his 'successful' reign, well done Paul Agnew.... PR advisor to the stars!

Haha thanks for reminding us Andy, what a complete joke of a Manager and a Man he was.
We can raise a smile now he has gone but at the times these were said , his words just made us all cringe with embarrassment that after a string of decent men running our club we had a complete fantasist in charge of our beloved club.
And Fantasist is putting it politely, it wasnt just his stupid , deluded comments it was the arrogant smug way he said them and many more , usually after a defeat that made him depised by most of us fans.
REJOICE IT HAS GONE

Surely the most memorable quote was when, LIVE on Talksport radio he claimed we'd be playing champions league football within 5 years.

I was driving to Leek, staffs at the time and was cringing so much I nearly crashed the car !!

He made it worse when, after he said it, Ronnie Irani tried to help Kean out by saying "Steve I think you mean the Europa League don't you?"

Only for that muppet Kean to confirm he was totally mentally ill by replying "No the Champions league"

Even Alan Brazil couldnt defend one of his "ex-footballing luvies" on that one - he was completly and utterly speechless !!

One of my personal favourites from the Steve Kean Compendium of BS was when he justified taking the players to the Middle East mid-season (c.Jan'11) by saying that they had trained on a special kind of sand that could only be found in that part of the world. Not forgetting that he qlso remarked that the players vitamin D levels had never been so high.

Steve Kean - positively the most gigantic swinging appendage ever to disgrace the modern game.

Alan Brazil Paul Merson and his side kick Ronnie good boy Irani should not comment on things they do not know about.

The jouyrnos know more than these ex players abput what is really happening at the clubs ,sorry exclude the Daily Mirror as that guy who guests on Talk Sport knows very little about the inglorious history surrounding Kean's tenancy. Paul Merson knows nothing at all about anything except drinking he failed at Walsall and I would not pay him in washers to sit on any panel they should bring Rodney Marsh back on Sky Sports as its dismal since he left.

Yes, and it's about time we heard from Ryan about his departure from Ewood! Oh no you WON'T - as Kean took legal action out against Nelsen upon his departure!

We may be waiting a while - but NOW is the time Andy, before Venky's appoint the wrong man and make a mess of it all over again - to dig the dirt and find out the whole clutch of messy stories - especially surrounding the players who left the club under 'mysterious' circumstances!

The moronic pundits on Sky still peddle their 'Kean hard done-by' garbage.

We the fans can now move on and prove all our critics wrong by getting behind the club and the new manager in due course. We need to turn out in huge numbers against Wolves and show the football world just why we protested and boycotted. Kean has gone so the fans must come back in big numbers to show just how much we really do care.

We will have the last laugh.

Some of the best quotes there from the nam who knew how to spin them. Kean by name and Keen by nature.

What I would like to see now is for some of the pundits who backed him, to prove they really meant what they said. A good example of that would be for Charlie boy Nicholas, to back him as the next Scotland boss and Merson to recommend hom to Arsenal. I can imagine the outcry now from any club who dares to mention his name as a potential manager.

I think he should now dissapear from where he came onto obscurity, unless his mate Sir Alex can find a little job for him!

Just for old time sake.

Question: How Many Steve Keans does it take to change a light bulb?

Answers:

1 to say that it is in fact a positive that the light bulb blew.

1 to defend how well the light bulb had done in the first 30 minutes before it blew.

1 to explain how only 1% of people believe the light bulb to have blown so it can’t have done.

1 to say how he didn’t see the lightbulb blow so therefore it can’t have done.

1 to exclaim that there was absolutely no chance of the light bulb blowing.

1 to announce that the blown light bulb will be signing a new contract within the next 48 hours.

1 to say that he in fact ‘forfeited’ the light bulb so that we could concentrate on some new light bulbs.

1 to proclaim that the dark days are behind us even though he’s stood there in the dark.

1 to say that he has signed a host of new foreign light bulbs, but will have to store them away in the shed until they adjust to the pace of English electricity.

1 to explain that the light emitted from a light bulb is not the only way to measure its success.

1 to defend that the shape and ambition of the light bulb was fine despite the fact it failed to emit a single photon of light on or off target in 90 minutes.

1 to put the light bulb in the wrong way and stand back whilst it blows the entire fusebox.

1 to explain that he will sit down with the broken light bulb’s owners and discuss budgets for some cheap replacements.

1 to explain that before he does anything with regards replacing the light bulb he must run it past his agent, Jerome Anderson and his lawyers.

1 to explain how growing up on the rough streets of Glasgow taught him how to change the light bulb.

1 to claim that the light bulb cannot light up due to contractual issues.

1 to claim that the light bulb is injured and will not light up again this season, before everybody sees it light up in a different house just days later.

1 to claim that we will conclude all light bulb buying early in the transfer window and buy experienced light bulbs that will come in and shine straight away.

1 to claim that the light bulb exceeded its capacity because its drink was spiked.

1 to say the electric company are fully behind him despite cutting off the power six months ago.

1 to claim the light bulb was not in the right frame of mind to light up despite the light bulb insisting otherwise.

1 to announce that the light bulb is going nowhere before selling it to the Russians.

1 to claim that he will attend to the light bulb after he has waded through the hundreds of letters of support for his work.

1 to state that the light bulb worked perfectly well at Old Trafford and Anfield so what’s the problem?

1 to explain that the light bulb is a late developer, but will shine brightly in the near future.

1 to insist that the new light bulb is the next best thing since sliced bread, then never use said light bulb.

1 to say that despite being broken, these are exciting times for the light bulb.

1 to take the broken light bulb to Dubai to increase its vitamin D levels.

1 to purchase a light bulb multi-pack, aiming to highlight their ‘togetherness’

1 to claim that the electrician who installed the light bulb is a ‘f***ing crook’, so he should fit the new light bulb.

1 to say that the broken light bulb has taken a step backwards to take two steps forwards.

1 to claim that it was he who had spotted the light bulb’s potential and was responsible for getting it fitted in the first place.

1 to claim that the owners of the broken light bulb are in fact very knowledgeable about light bulb maintenance despite the fact they have no idea what to do.

1 to claim that there had been a foul in the run-up to the light bulb blowing so therefore we were unlucky that it did.

1 to rather than put in a like-for-like replacement light bulb, attempt to install a light bulb which doesn’t fit the socket just because he had fallen out with the first.

1 to do absolutely nothing about changing the light bulb. No substitutions allowed.
