Kean happy with Blackburn Rovers business

NEW FACE Bradley Orr joined Blackburn Rovers yesterday NEW FACE Bradley Orr joined Blackburn Rovers yesterday

STEVE Kean believes his transfer deadline day double will prove good business for Blackburn Rovers – after being left frustrated in his search for Premier League experience.

The Rovers boss added Swedish international Marcus Olsson and QPR right back Bradley Orr to his squad before the transfer window shut last night, having earlier in the month signed Bordeaux striker Anthony Modeste on loan.

Ahead of tonight’s crucial Premier League visit of Newcastle United, midfielder Keith Andrews departed for West Bromwich Albion but want-away skipper Chris Samba, contract rebel Junior Hoilett and in demand Mauro Formica remain at the club.

Left sided Olsson, 23, signed as a free agent having left Swedish outfit Halmstads while Orr, 29, joined Rovers for an undisclosed fee, having had limited Premier League experience with the Hoops this season.

Kean stated before the window opened that he wanted signings who “could hit the ground running” but yesterday admitted the club struggled to find that available Premier League experience.

Kean said: “We said we wanted three or four bodies in and we have managed to get three in. The ones we have got in, it has been tough getting them in, but we have new faces which is always good.

“The plan was to bring in experienced players and we tried hard. We tried a number of different avenues to sign players with more Premier League experience but we got flat nos, we got don’t come back, don’t enquire again.

“It has been that type of window where clubs have been trying to keep their squads together and it has been really difficult to get players in.

“The players who are playing in teams, clubs are fighting tooth and nail to keep them. We tried for a few that have started in other teams and it was ‘don’t be silly we are not selling’. So went and got Marcus, Anthony and Bradley and are very happy with what we have got.”

Rovers have been adamant that Samba was not for sale, despite the big defender strongly expressing his wish to quit Ewood Park.

No improved bids came in for Samba and Kean will now talk to him this morning before deciding whether or not to involve him in tonight’s Newcastle clash.

“It could be seen as being a risk or it could be seen as taking a stance,” said Kean. “If we’d said ‘yes ok’ we’d have been seen as being soft. I don’t know if you’d say it’s a gamble trying to keep your best players together.

“The way Chris has conducted his performances after the window closes has always been of a very high standard so we hope that’ll continue.

“Would he sit and sulk? He might. You’d better ask Chris that. We put out the statement saying we wanted him to be here.”

Liverpool-born Orr started his career at Newcastle United and made four appearances on loan for Burnley.

He then made more than 200 appearances for Bristol City before signing for QPR. The right back played a key role in helping them into the Premier League but has found himself on the periphery at Loftus Road this season.

Orr’s signing leaves Swiss full back Scott Sutter disappointed as he was sent back to Young Boys of Bern.

Marcus Olsson is Rovers left back Martin’s twin brother and has joined Rovers after leaving Halmstads.

The man is on a different planet.

Which one of those is going to "hit the ground running?"

Where was the financial backing you were so confident about?

Why have we "released" 3 players with premier league experience for nothing and replaced them with players that have less or no premier league experience - when claiming that is exactly what you were looking for.

Steve Kean is nothing but a puppet, a facade to this VILEkys asset stripping machine.

I hope they all drop dead.

So tell us Mr Kean - if you wanted someone who could hit the ground running why did we let Ryan Nelsen go? You led us to believe he was injured. Why would a top team take on an injured player?

i think considering most clubs weren't loaning out players and the fact we had absolutely no money to buy players suggests kean did a reasonable job this transfer window.

regarding samba as all bids for him were insulting, i am glad we kept him. but, if we had got a bid of around £10m i would have sold him. in a relegation battle i would rather have £10m to spend on quality players than hope a grown adult on around £60,000 a week can find it in his heart to motivate himself to run around and try for 90mins every week.

Get a grip reikoo - we lost 3 players with premiership experience. Roberts - once OK, now sh1t. Andrews - always sh1t. Nelsen - a great player for us in the day, but at 34 on the wane.

I would have kept Nelsen for the relegation battle mind you, because his attitude and awareness is superb.

I cant stand Kean and his fibs and silly condescending statements but considering what he had to play with regards transfer funds (zero, nil, nothing!) then I reckon he has brought two decent players in (Modeste and Orr) who can play an immediate part in improving the team.

Orr is exactly what we needed - a proper RB! Plus Modeste can be a big threat up front if he can find his form quickly.

As for losing Nellie, Andrews and Roberts - well will they really be missed? Nope...

Plus we kept the big three of Samba, NZonzi and Hoilett at least till the end of this season.

Given the rubbish state the club is in then I think its probably the best we could have hoped for...

Kean would do better to stop defending the owners so much. He could have said that he's disappointed with the investment. Venky's lack of investment means that it will be annual struggle against relegation for as long as we're in the Premiership. He's had no money at all to spend - so would've had to sell Formica to bring in an experienced player.

A bit of an over reaction to Nelsen leaving. It would've been nice to have had a Tugay-style farewell on the last day, but why deny him half-a-season at Spuds when we've got 4 decent centre halves?

I agree with Black - we have a 50-50 chance of staying up so only one option, to get behind the team.

Kean has had his hands tied but why is he trying to pull the wool over our eyes?? it is ridiculous, he is treating us like idiots instead of just telling us he wasnt allowed to spend money on transfers or wages! we all know this is the truth and he would gain so much respect from the people that matter - the fans, if he told something like the truth for once!

With old but big wages players moved on have Venkys woken up to the fact too many generouse contracts were dished out which caused the big losses - along with AGENT FEES! This is where there extra £12m investment and the Jones money has been wasted. I blame Kean and Agents for bad management and Venkys for ignoring the old board.
.
Perhaps a bit of financial reality has come into play - I just hope its not to late.
.
On the positive side we have not lost any big players and have managed to freshen up a bit. QPR have bought themselves out of it by appointing Sparky and backing him so its any 3 from 4 now.

The last twelve months have shown us what to expect from Venkys. Why should we be surprised/ disappointed at this transfer window. Sad to see Premiership experienced players leaving but if Marcus is anywhere as good as Martin then that will have been good business. QPR fans I know are disappointed to lose Bradley Orr as they say he is solid as RB, a position we desperately needed someone fill. Anthony Modeste did have great potential in France and I'm sure with good support, confidence will come and he could prove to be an handfull. Like everyone else I despise Venkys for what they have done to our club and dislike Steve Kean who is out of his depth at this club but if we are to survive and stay in this league we must now get 100% behind the team. The protests aren't working. Nobody is taking any notice. Kean and Venkys are here until the end of this season at least. Save the protests until the fight is either won or lost and get behind the boys. COYB

Roberts and Andrews are both good pros valued by football folk, but have been on the receiving end of amazing amounts of rubbish on posts on this site. I'd have thought that most here would be glad to see the back of them.
On the whole, I'm underwhelmed by the transfer window, though I can see his logic, assuming lack of funds. None of the key players left. Even if Bradley Orr is not in the starting 11, competition for places is important and he will be available to cover for injuries or drop in form.

I want to feel sorry for Steve Kean, I want to blame the owners (everyone knows they are at fault) but why does he have to say the things he does?

"They're being supportive to me. Anytime I ask for a player I normally get them, so that's good support" - Steve Kean on Venky's 24th Decemeber 2011

So why when we asked for players did we not get them?

"The plan was to bring in experienced players and we tried hard" - oh well

Sorry to hear he left like this as he has been a proud Blackburn Rovers ambassador here in NZ too. Reports we've had here saying the club paid him out to save money, can understand this from a business point of view, given his age and injury history but seems like cr*p from the fans point of view, no chance to acknowledge a player who gave good service to the club.

With the news coming out that Nelson has just joined Spurs on a 6 month deal with a one year option, it has become clear his "injuries" are cured, since he no longer has to play under the Venkys and Kean.
-
I think the blatent lies of both owners and manager since they started convinced Nelson to stay injured until he could get released, and then subsequently transferred to another club. Not so subtle, but not as morally bankrupt as how the owners and manager has behaved.
-
Nelson- a massive loss. But he was already lost the moment Kean and the Venkys came in.

I think if you read all the bits that are now available especially the 2010 accounts and the leaked letter from the old board then its clear the club was being run as a money no object for the first year under Venkys and then reality set in.
.
Players and their agents made a fortune in this epriod and have left us in a financial mess because we did not follow the well trusted trading of the Walker Trust in this period.
.
Venkys pockets are not deep enough to ride it but at least they resisted selling the big players along with moving on some of those big wages not contributing much - Nelsen (good luck admiral) Roberts, Salgado, Andrews.
.
I think it has turned out in Jan a lot better than the "Fire Sale" that could have happened? Venkys have not sold the silver and have kept the bank happy with a £2m payment and offloading some wages - it had to happen?

So our club captain and team captain wanted to leave, what does that say about the situation at Rovers ?
Nelsen, Salgado, Andrews, Emmo, Roberts, Samba - despite huge differences in ability have all been round a bit and all wanted out and were squeezed out.
The only ones who want in are a second-chancer (Modeste, plus the Yak, who was good business, I agree), someone who's not made it (Orr). I hope for the best for Marcus Olly, but if he's so hot, how come he's on a free ?
As to those above who say that in the first year "money was no object for Venkys", please remind me of our marquee signings in that period when money was flowing ?
Also, if I owed 10 million and my bank let me off with a goodwill payment of 2 million, I reckon I'd have found a very unusual bank.
I tend to belive the sportsintelligence report that says that the money is going to be very thin for wages in March - hence the pruning now.
The odds are still on Venkys selling up and Kean disappearing when we're relegated.
Prepare for a fans buy-out now.

However I do believe everyone is quick to hammer Kean so I I think a little credit when it is due is not to unfair. Our best signings this transfer window are the players we have kept. All Kean has to do now is hopefully get them to play as they have done the last few games (Stoke excluded) and against Bolton, Wolves and Wigan we may just have a chance of staying up.
3 points tonight would be a good start!

When will the deliberate downgrading of the club stop? We are finished as a Prem club with Venkys in charge. Even if we stay up this season. The mentality is to deliberately push established players to want to leave, or stay and work for half pay. The championship has a raft of well run clubs who will be more inviting to potential gems. They have to pass the club on to someone who cares. Nelson has been absent nearly all season, did he just not want to play? The spine of the team is unhappy and kicking their heals to leave and the only replacements are either people who just want a foothold in the richest league or people who can't get a game and have a very low value. This mentality will fall straight through the next league as well.

I dont understand what everyone is going on about here. As lets face it we all support Blackburn Rovers right? Ok we are going through a pooh time at the moment but how can you blame Kean for it all you cant at all. Look at the facts if some one offered you a premier leauge job wouldnt you say yes??? Well i know i would and yeah he did. The point is that he is a yes man for the Venkys it doesnt matter who we get they will always be a yes person to them. I dont get why we have kept Samba though as i dont think he will play again for us. All im saying is i want Venkeys out as much as the next person. But lets get behind Kean and the team. As in my eyes the players want to play for Kean but not for Venkys. Its a bad situation but lets just get behind the team. Look forward to your views

Very mixed feelings about this transfer window!

Good to see that we've kept Samba and Hoillet at the club and we've cleared some of the old guard from the wage bill.

But for a club fighting a relegation battle I would have thought he would have brought in experienced EPL players into the club and not 3 players with very little experience!

More likely that Kean couldn't attract the quality and experience that we needed, after all he hasn't the pulling power of Hughes or O'Neil has he?

Let me get this right... we were not going to be a selling team. We were going to be pushing for places in Europe. We were going to do our business early and sign players with Premiership experience, so we could hit the ground running.

So...we get a striker, because of course we've not been scoring goals.

We get a left winger, again because we're so pushed in that area. This one is so good his team said "See you later, bon voyage" and he has already had trials with us and failed to impress.

Then we get a defender who has played only a couple of games for a team in a similar trouble as ourselves...obviousl
y a major coup for us.

But...we keep a defender who doesn't want to play for us and sell the other lynchpin of our defence even though he had a supposed "Career-threatening injury".

So the main area we need to strengthen has actually weakened. But what makes this worse is the deceit. Do Kean and Venkys honestly think we forget what has been said? Not a selling club? Bye bye, Jones. Bye, bye, Nelsen. We're not playing people so as to avoid clauses in contracts. We have no money and are being lied to.

I honestly feel like stopping going to Ewood. I'll be there tonight, freezing my balls off like an idiot, because I'm loyal to my club but I am losing all my motivation and I'm far from the only one.

You will never win the fans back. Have some decency...resign/sel
l the club to people who care and will make good on any promises made.

You may not care...the fans do.

QPR's reserve right back is "exactly what we needed"? Really? I suspect none of the new signings are going to make the starting eleven. So much for the four signings with experience who can "hit the ground running". I think Kean has spent so much of the last year lying that he no longer knows he's doing it.
Cmon Billy - We have needed a RB for the best part of three seasons now.

Orr is an established and experienced right back, rated by fans at both QPR and Bristol City. He was RB all last season as QPR won the Championship in style and was in the PFA team of the year just a couple of years ago when he was at Ashton Gate.

I reckon he may not make the team tonight but will be a regular within the next couple of games.

I understand your disappointment at the lack of big name signings but Orr should prove to be spot-on for us.

Nobody should renew their season tickets. Like I 've said, they'll still be available when the season starts regardless of who's in charge. So, if things are looking up come August (!), for whatever reason, you'll still be able to get one.

They'll be chucking matchday tickets around like confetti anyways if nobody has renewed so we can all adopt a wait-and-see attitude at no extra cost.

Venkys have not sold the silver and have kept the bank happy with a £2m payment and offloading some wages - it had to happen? . Now for 3 months lets get behind the lads and go for that 17th spot? Nelson has been absent nearly all season, did he just not want to play? The spine of the team is unhappy and kicking their heals to leave and the only replacements are either people who just want a foothold in the richest league or people who can't get a game and have a very low value. The only bit of power you have as a fan is support. If everybody carries on pushing against the wind, we will all go down and deservedly so. If those who protested had not, there would be even less commitment from an already undercommitted owner. If you don't likle what is going on, but continue to ignore it, you might as well be a robot. Many many previously successful clubs are below par at the moment, but you only see your own club in it's true light, and you only have an idea of Rovers failings. If you temporarily withdraw support, until they get the message, you cannot be held responsible for helping create a disaster. Needs must.

The well organised protests will continue quite rightly so tonight is not about Venkys or Kean - its about the Rovers.

Everyone has to get behind the team tonight and at all games till the end of the season...you can clearly see how well the players responded to the normal level of good vocal support....every game should just be about the players and the fans and working together to make it hard for the opposition and helping us get some more valuable points on the table....

I think its time we get behind the manager and support the players. Bolton and Wigan who are also in the same peril. Our frustrations should be aimed purely at Venky's. a. Money was not sufficient
b. Players did not want to come and play for you
c. Players were aware that the club was in turmoil and even money wouldnt buy them- hence once again Loan and free transfers

Honesty seems to be a word lacking in the Ewood dictionary or they are not sure what it means.

I am certain the postive activity in the transfer window will see a surge in season tickets come May 2012
