By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
STEVE Kean believes his transfer deadline day double will prove good business for Blackburn Rovers – after being left frustrated in his search for Premier League experience.
The Rovers boss added Swedish international Marcus Olsson and QPR right back Bradley Orr to his squad before the transfer window shut last night, having earlier in the month signed Bordeaux striker Anthony Modeste on loan.
Ahead of tonight’s crucial Premier League visit of Newcastle United, midfielder Keith Andrews departed for West Bromwich Albion but want-away skipper Chris Samba, contract rebel Junior Hoilett and in demand Mauro Formica remain at the club.
Left sided Olsson, 23, signed as a free agent having left Swedish outfit Halmstads while Orr, 29, joined Rovers for an undisclosed fee, having had limited Premier League experience with the Hoops this season.
Kean stated before the window opened that he wanted signings who “could hit the ground running” but yesterday admitted the club struggled to find that available Premier League experience.
Kean said: “We said we wanted three or four bodies in and we have managed to get three in. The ones we have got in, it has been tough getting them in, but we have new faces which is always good.
“The plan was to bring in experienced players and we tried hard. We tried a number of different avenues to sign players with more Premier League experience but we got flat nos, we got don’t come back, don’t enquire again.
“It has been that type of window where clubs have been trying to keep their squads together and it has been really difficult to get players in.
“The players who are playing in teams, clubs are fighting tooth and nail to keep them. We tried for a few that have started in other teams and it was ‘don’t be silly we are not selling’. So went and got Marcus, Anthony and Bradley and are very happy with what we have got.”
Rovers have been adamant that Samba was not for sale, despite the big defender strongly expressing his wish to quit Ewood Park.
No improved bids came in for Samba and Kean will now talk to him this morning before deciding whether or not to involve him in tonight’s Newcastle clash.
“It could be seen as being a risk or it could be seen as taking a stance,” said Kean. “If we’d said ‘yes ok’ we’d have been seen as being soft. I don’t know if you’d say it’s a gamble trying to keep your best players together.
“The way Chris has conducted his performances after the window closes has always been of a very high standard so we hope that’ll continue.
“Would he sit and sulk? He might. You’d better ask Chris that. We put out the statement saying we wanted him to be here.”
Liverpool-born Orr started his career at Newcastle United and made four appearances on loan for Burnley.
He then made more than 200 appearances for Bristol City before signing for QPR. The right back played a key role in helping them into the Premier League but has found himself on the periphery at Loftus Road this season.
Orr’s signing leaves Swiss full back Scott Sutter disappointed as he was sent back to Young Boys of Bern.
Marcus Olsson is Rovers left back Martin’s twin brother and has joined Rovers after leaving Halmstads.

The man is on a different planet.
Which one of those is going to "hit the ground running?"
Where was the financial backing you were so confident about?
Why have we "released" 3 players with premier league experience for nothing and replaced them with players that have less or no premier league experience - when claiming that is exactly what you were looking for.
Steve Kean is nothing but a puppet, a facade to this VILEkys asset stripping machine.
I hope they all drop dead.

I cant stand Kean and his fibs and silly condescending statements but considering what he had to play with regards transfer funds (zero, nil, nothing!) then I reckon he has brought two decent players in (Modeste and Orr) who can play an immediate part in improving the team.
Orr is exactly what we needed - a proper RB! Plus Modeste can be a big threat up front if he can find his form quickly.
As for losing Nellie, Andrews and Roberts - well will they really be missed? Nope...

Venkys have tied his hands and basically told him to replace 30k a week players with 8k a week players. this will save venkys a few bob this season.... but at what cost?
Kean has had his hands tied but why is he trying to pull the wool over our eyes?? it is ridiculous, he is treating us like idiots instead of just telling us he wasnt allowed to spend money on transfers or wages! we all know this is the truth and he would gain so much respect from the people that matter - the fans, if he told something like the truth for once!
to tell us that there was no players available for transfer is really taking the pi$$ out of us and that is Keans greatest fault!!!

i have studied all transfers yesterday and i am glad we did not get any of the donkeys on sale or loaned.qpr have panicked buyed and have bought players who in the past have had a good season or two
but then their clubs have decided to drop them.
to me its says they are past it.
also nelsen has been a good servant but last season he was looking vunerable and slow.
the only way to hit venkys is to boycott rovers stores and matches .i know this will hurt fans but it will hurt venkys more and hopefully force them to sell
the most negative thing yesterday was grella not being released i think terminating his contract would have cost rovers.

With old but big wages players moved on have Venkys woken up to the fact too many generouse contracts were dished out which caused the big losses - along with AGENT FEES! This is where there extra £12m investment and the Jones money has been wasted. I blame Kean and Agents for bad management and Venkys for ignoring the old board.
.
Perhaps a bit of financial reality has come into play - I just hope its not to late.
.
On the positive side we have not lost any big players and have managed to freshen up a bit. QPR have bought themselves out of it by appointing Sparky and backing him so its any 3 from 4 now.

We need 3 points tonight because the rest of Feb looks very tough?

So our club captain and team captain wanted to leave, what does that say about the situation at Rovers ?
Nelsen, Salgado, Andrews, Emmo, Roberts, Samba - despite huge differences in ability have all been round a bit and all wanted out and were squeezed out.
The only ones who want in are a second-chancer (Modeste, plus the Yak, who was good business, I agree), someone who's not made it (Orr). I hope for the best for Marcus Olly, but if he's so hot, how come he's on a free ?
As to those above who say that in the first year "money was no object for Venkys", please remind me of our marquee signings in that period when money was flowing ?
Also, if I owed 10 million and my bank let me off with a goodwill payment of 2 million, I reckon I'd have found a very unusual bank.
I tend to belive the sportsintelligence report that says that the money is going to be very thin for wages in March - hence the pruning now.
The odds are still on Venkys selling up and Kean disappearing when we're relegated.
Prepare for a fans buy-out now.

When will the deliberate downgrading of the club stop? We are finished as a Prem club with Venkys in charge. Even if we stay up this season. The mentality is to deliberately push established players to want to leave, or stay and work for half pay. The championship has a raft of well run clubs who will be more inviting to potential gems. They have to pass the club on to someone who cares. Nelson has been absent nearly all season, did he just not want to play? The spine of the team is unhappy and kicking their heals to leave and the only replacements are either people who just want a foothold in the richest league or people who can't get a game and have a very low value. This mentality will fall straight through the next league as well.

I think the fight has gone from most supporters and it seems there is more of a resigned acceptance to being controlled by these people. If thats the case we deserve to go down, this is not the club I have known for over 50 years, a family orientated, sociable and professionally run club. Now the emphasis is on cost cutting ( in a damaging way), and non-communication with the supporters, as though they don't matter and are not important. If we lie back and pathetically submit we deserve all we get. Course we should get behind the team, but there should be a way of keeping kean out of the fans approval and make life for him as difficult as possible, after al, thats what he is doing to us... and getting paid for it...... for those wanna be academics amongst us (you know who you are) I hope I have not been too peurile or vitriolic in my observations.... its years since I was at Uni, enjoyed every minute

I dont like SK before anyone starts. I think that he's a good coach, terrible manager. He tacticly inept and full of sh!t. However, He is the manager and will be until the end of the season at least. Although something that is bothering me is that a few weeks ago when this Barclays £10M loan repayment came out the comments on LT were slating the club for not being run properly and that they were asset stripping. So when the club start looking to save money and look at loan deals instead of wasting money on players like Goodwillie Ribeiro etc they get slated again.
