Double deal collapses as Rovers suffer deadline day nightmare
11:34pm Thursday 31st January 2013 in News
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
The Blackburn Rovers attempt to sign DJ Campbell collapsed before the 11pm deadline
BLACKBURN Rovers' attempts to sign DJ Campbell and Jerome Thomas have broken down at the 11th hour.
The duo put pen to paper on deals at Rovers but neither move was completed in time, before this evening's 11pm transfer deadline.
The last-gasp drama leaves manager Michael Appleton having signed just one player this window, Everton youngster Anton Forrester.
Meanwhile, Simon Vuckevic's contract has been ended by mutual consent, with Diogo Rosado joining Benfica on loan.
Ruben Rochina has also claimed on twitter he has joined Spanish outfit Real Zaragoza on loan until the end of the season.
Jordan Slew has joined Rotherham on loan and Micah Evans has joined Macclesfield on loan.

So we got rid of formica, vucevic and rochina... and the biggest problem with our squad is creating chances... we all know rhodes scores every time hes given half a chance. So the only players who can realistically play down the wings now are peds, king and ollson. Backup of nunez and morris. I would have much prefered the total opposite, the three best have gone. Defensively we are still 1 man short for cover, no inroads made whatsoever on that front. Didnt appleton leave blackpool because he was promised cash that didnt materialize? I expect his resignation in the morning then...

As for the players that have left, I agree that there can be no rhyme or reason why Rochina was let go with no replacement signed up. Formica and Simon I can understand because they did not set the world on fire for whatever reason. Can we cancel the loan deals?
And, if it is down to an administrative c*ck-up, then this cannot be put at the Venky's door. It is the people who run things behind the scene such as Shaw and the like who have to take responsibility.
Finally, let's not tear ourselves apart over this! Appleton seems to have been making strides in getting things organised both on and off the pitch. It is a long shot that we are going to go up this season anyway so perhaps we look at this as a consolidation season. After all that is what we did last time we went down and most clubs don't bounce back straight away.
It is better to use Venky's and their money rather than alienate them because after all there are not exactly hundreds of billionaires beating a path down Bolton Road to hand over their dosh.

And as far as blaming the admin rather than venky's is concerned, who the hell do you think removed the very capable last administration and put in place the current one?
Wild Rover said at the beginning of yesterday, stop 'pre-judging,' lets 'wait and see.' We've waited, we've seen. The fact is it just isn't necessary anymore. Anybody without the blind desire to 'look on the positive side' knows what's going on here and the rest just have their head in the sand.
A fully expected awful transfer window that was essentially just a wage-slashing exercise.

Whatever the reasons this is a most embarrassing, if not a wholly, damaging situation to what was becoming a steadying ship in these eye's , at least.
So, back to the drawing board, and conjecture will abound ?
I doubt that any information of substance will be forthcoming out of the good ship Ewood over these matters, but at least we can form our opinion from the field of play - there will lie the answers ?
Appleton now as the tools to work with now and until the end of the season with which to carve out a successful team, or not ?
Will be very interesting if nothing else ?

We may want to consider that players didn't want to come to Blackburn as well. After all the bad publicity of the last couple of years, that may be an issue. & a load of other ****.... If they didn't want to come to the shambles as you think, then how come they were on the verge of signing? Like most of the comments I agree, what have they been doing for 30 days? Why when the squad is top heavy with midfielders & forwards have we not signed a defender? I bet Michael Appleton woke up this morning thinking he'd had a bad dream & wishing he'd stayed at Blackpool...

That was 14 days after he had joined the club.
Appleton added that Shebby had his telephone number if he needed to speak with him - a very strange comment indeed.
The next day I asked on this forum, if Appleton was not peaking to Shebby, then who would be responsible for negoatiating transfer fees and new player contracts in the transfer window.
I therefore wonder whether we have we just witnessed Shebby's revenge?
If not our inability to sign players must be down to Shaw and Agnew's incompetetence or Venky's refusing to authorise the deals.
Either way it makes a mockery of the clubs stated intention of an immediate return to the Premier League and ranks alongside our performance in last years January window when we brought in Anthony Modeste, Markus Olsson and Bradley Orr.

i genuinely feel sorry for appleton - he seems a regular bloke who thought/believed he would be allowed to bring a few in to strengthen the team - instead he has been forced to pare the squad down (regardless of what some of you think of each player's ability) and bring in a young lad from everton - whatever way you look at it today the squad is weaker than it was last week.
we are told that appleton was miffed at blackpool because oyston would not sanction expenditure on the squad - well, welcome to ewood mr appleton - venkys make the oystons look like a bunch on small-town estate agents (oops!). whether it is c0ck-up or conspiracy the net effect is the same and rovers are left looking weaker at the end of this window. i wonder if appleton is still impressed with the owners "extremely ambitious" plans for BRFC and their desire to get back into the premiership.
no doubt modan will tell us how many rolls royce cars they have bought this week and how fast their helicopter goes at and the number of en-suite bathrooms in their pune mansion

it wasn't Venkys that brought the PR firm into Ewood.
It was Michael Appleton who made it one of his conditions of joining the Rovers that he could bring in a PR firm that he had worked with previously.
This transfer window debacle is nothing to do with him (or his PR team) this is just down to gross incompetence within the club admin, though we will never know who is to blame. Nothing any PR or manager could do about that.
I bet MA is absolutely seething right now - but a lot of the moves did work out - Rochina, Formica and Vukevic all promised much but delivered little. The others that went were all bit part players that had no future at Ewood.
The best result of the window was keeping hold of Olsson and Dann (and probably Robbo for a little while too). If either Scott or Martin had gone in the window then we would have proper cause to complain as we would have been severely depleted in defense - as these are two very good players. Oh yes and welcome to Ewood to Anton Forrester. At least one move in went ok....

The squad is currently about where it should be in terms of ability - mid-table, 2nd tier of english football. With the owners imperative to reduce the wage bill, they only way is down, What annoys me is that there was no need for this decline to have happened - surely if the owners had not dismissed out of hand the experience at executive level, the club could have continued to maintain its hard fought for premier status. I do not think they will ever be forgiven for such mis-management and more long-standing fans will vote with their feet. Another relegation or two would do the club some good - we were something like 13th in the premier league when they sacked Big Sam - now we are around the same spot a division below - actions speak louder than words - and the owners actions have been very, very damaging - the fans are long past listening to any spin or PR from no-marks.

Those who say possibly the Venky's didn't sign off at the last minute, it is 4.30 AM in India when the transfer window closes, so they are not staying awake all night to sign off that is not businesses work. This is clearly SHAW and AGNEW messing up.
Also every one forgot about the guy (can't remember his name) Appleton bought over from Portsmouth who is a whizkid (Appleton called him 'his mobile phone' or something like that) in buying and selling players. What was he doing? Or is this all his doing?
Lets forget all that it is always Venky's fault...

If they employed the right people, which they already had when they bought the club, things would have been better organised and probably gone through smoothly.
Always assuming that was what Venkys wanted, and it is by no means clear that they wanted to spend any money at all, given their record during the last five transfer windows.

They purchased Rhodes to appease the natives knowing full well that Rhodes would be a nice set of blinkers to the ewood faithful.
Well, now look at the squad and hand on heart we are looking towards another relegation battle.
I hope appleton can motivate the division one squad we have left, as next transfer window Rhodes will be long gone and there is only one parachute paymenet to wait for.
There should be a government inquiry and we need to demand one now.

Such is life, nobody died that I am aware of.
Why the panic? Sometimes **** just happens.
Sad to see Rochina go but he is a luxury in this division and Vucevic was in all honesty never quite right.
No quite sure but did either of them feature in the last couple of games? Which to all who made the effort to go down and watch were in fact massive improvements on what we had seen for sometime.
But we still have Givet, if he decides to play, and Best has resumed full time training, so all is not lost.
Lets be honest, we were trying to hang onto players just as other clubs were trying to hang onto theirs.
Get real guys, even if we had got rid of 10 players there would be another 15 on our books who still wouldn't even get on the bench.
All deadwood.

The only departure I think we may miss is Rochina, his creativity and flair had its uses. Vukcevic, Formica, Rosado, Linganzi and Slew were never in Appleton's plans, hence them not being named in the team sheet for the past 2 matches.
However not to have signed the two players when they had been at Brockhall for a good chunk of the day is just diabolic. Campbell should of been signed much earlier, both players had even signed the papers!

IF (note the big IF) the Venky's have gone onto TV and the Press and said there is going to be money to spend on transfers and hired a PR company to relay that message whilst all the time deliberately plotting to carry out a last day debacle like this then they are the worse kind of masochists because they are going to get slaughtered for what has happened and Rovers stock and theirs will plummet even further.
It probably didn't help the situation that we have completely changed the management team in the last month either.
And of course we need billionaires to back us to get into the Premiership or crowds of 40,000 plus which we don't have because Premiership football is a (very) rich person's game nowadays. Even Jack Walker would struggle to compete with the Citys, Chelseas, Newcastles, QPRs, Stokes, etc these days...and we were which is why the Walkers trust sold us.

The phone rings and it's one of the bod's from that little sideline they have running in a small backwater town in Lancashire, pleading with her about something called the transfer window and asking her to sanction the signing of a DJ? Mrs D thinks back to their last visit to this bleak outpost and of all the bile and hatred shown to them, she pictures the snowball screaming through the air, and the chants of Venky's out and scum... Yet another January disaster. Once again we have two respected but costly players, this time Robbo and Givet, still on the books but whom the manager isn't going to pick. All that dead wood, signed by Kean largely but also the summer dead wood was also signed by Shabby has put some dosh in agents' pockets, unfortunately the FA are too busy themselves trying to say on the gravy train to mount an enquiry.
Did anyone notice that the Admiral Nelsen, who was not fit to play according to Keano, was given a guard of honour by his team mates and cheered off the field by the fans for his last game at QPR ? What a disgace that our owners and management didn't give Ryan the chance for a similar well-earned send off.

Michael Appleton will prove his worth and has already got off to a great start sorting out the wheat from the chaff in his squad.
The bloke only had 13 days of the window left after he joined to assess the current squad, sort through all the contracts and decide who he wanted out and who he wanted to come in.
Personally I think he did a very good job of it and the fact that someone at the club screwed-up the admin side of it no way reflects on Appleton.
As both players are expected to still sign for us on loan during the next week it isnt really a tragedy is it?
We are still in with a sound chance of making the play-offs the way the team, are playing and with these two new additions then that makes the chance all the more real.
No heartbreak for MA at Ewood, The only ones with broken hearts will be the doom merchants and false posters who magnify every little thing that happens at Ewood into something tragic - when actually this sort of stuff happens at most clubs all the time too.
More joy to come on Saturday when it will be the third time we beat Bristol City this season - shame we cant play em every week!

Singh and Hendry should be sacked.
Shaw and Agnew must get their act together and tell the fans the truth did the deal fell through or was it blocked by VENKYS to cut wage bills.
Why was Rochina loaned out before DJ Cambell and Thomas deal was signed before 11pm transfer deadline.
My blood is boiling now it's about time the truth come out of the boardroom.
Venky did say there are more funds avaliable for transfer for Mr Appleton.
Venky promised to look after BRFC with more funds avaiable for players so they must live up to that promises.
Walkers sold BRFC because the club was loosing money and left debts of £25 million so they wanted foreign billionaire to buy BRFC .
Venkys new BRFC investments was not good for business but just for love of sport.Venkys are business people and if they are in it for money please sell up BRFC because you will let the people down in Blackburn/Darwen who had high hopes that beloved BRFC will get lot of money for top class players and win trophies like late Jack Walker did in 1990 to 2000.

The fact is, no matter how bad things were, or what league we were in back then, the club is in its biggest crisis in its history and the team need us now more than ever to prevent further decline into oblivion, but you glory tasted fanboys prefer to stay away and call us who have never stopped attending for standing tall and supporting the team when it needs us most.
Now you have every right to do so, but don't sit there at your keyboard calling the true fans because your deluded fantasies of boycotting the club to cause Venky's to fold and walk away - of course handing the keys to BRSIT for 10k rupees as a gesture of good will - is being hampered by the true supporters obstinant stance to keep SUPPORTING.
Yes Darener, HSB and co. you have your opinion and a right to express it. If you're going to insult true supporters who are trying their best to ensure that the club doesn't end up in administration by getting behind the squad and doing what true supporters are supposed to do, then expect to be treated with the same contempt as the dingle keyboard warriors.
We have enough to contend with from the media, dingles and the circus behind us without you absentees in your warm cosy armchairs having a pop at us.
RTID.

Similarly don't forget they only spent about £4m up front for Rhodes; a large part of the rest will only be paid if we get back into the PL and let's face it, that just ain't going to happen. Oh, and don't forget the £20m+ profit on transfers last year.
The thing is they don't know what they're doing, as the song goes. I am with you in respect of them not asset stripping or skimming money off the top; the top of what? They've made a net loss of about £14m in two years, despite the above mentioned £20m profit on transfers. The club is still £20m in debt - something Kean (on behalf of Venkys) said it wasn't as making the club debt free was something the owners had to do.
They didn't have to do it and, more to the point, haven't.
They tried to save money when they had it now they're spending it when they haven't. Posters on here often come out with the phrase "you couldn't make it up"; problem is, you don't have to.

Whatever the reasons were for the Walker Trust wanting to sell up, they were fed a line by Venkys. Venkys made commitments regarding what they were going to do and their plans for the club; commitments they have failed to honour, without exception.
Being a top neurosurgeon does not automatically a great plasterer make; in the same way running a successful poultry business doesn't give you the devine right to be able to run a business in a totally unrelated industry.
I couldn't care less about the nationality or personal wealth of the owners; they can be from the planet Zog and not own a pot to p!$$ in for all I care as long they run the club responsibly, competently and honestly.
Venkys are none of those; they lied when they bought it and have been inept in running it, end of.
