Appleton disappointed by late leveller
10:31pm Tuesday 22nd January 2013 in News
ROVERS boss Michael Appleton was a disappointed man after he saw his side concede a last-gasp spot kick to draw with Brighton tonight.
Appleton seemed set for a first win after Jordan Rhodes converted a penalty on the stroke of half-time.
But David Goodwillie's late foul gave Albion the chance to level - and David Lopez did just that.
"We controlled the game and their keeper was a lot busier than ours and a second goal would have killed the game," said Appleton.
"The most disappointing thing is 45 seconds before the penalty fourth official is screaming at the refereesaying the game is finished.
"To conceed after that is very disappointing but it was a silly challenge from David and he knows that but I am not going to harp on about that."

Defensively we were excellent, we looked organised and I couldn't see Brighton getting back into it.
Then up steps the referee. Seems to have bowed to Poyet's complaints in awarding 5 minutes injury time despite no injuries and only 4 subs. I was expecting much better considering the media love that Brighton get. What I saw was appalling from the Brighton players. They truly are Poyet's team.
Anyway, the positives were there for me. The play-offs were always going to be a push after the Berg debacle. I'm willing to back Appleton over the rest of this season and the start of next to see what he can do.

The atmosphere was good, even with the small crowd and we had a laugh. It was like the old days, we spent 15 minutes complaining about the price of the pies and a lot of the match being abusive to the Ref, which is how a football match should be.
We didn't win the match because we went too negative for the last 15 minutes when there were plenty of spaces in their defence to exploit. Martin Olsen very good, except for a stupid yellow card, his brother worked hard, Grant Hanley very very good and Dann and Lowe also good, Kean had to make his first save in the 75th minute. Defensively much better than of late.
Won't mention the negatives, so the best player was Richards, excellent, he was strong and very good on the ball.
Hopefully Appelton will bring in players to solve the problem areas, he needs a real strong man leader in midfield, but the players gave everything tonight, they were clearly very very disappointed at the end.
Too late to get promotion this year, but on tonights performance I think that Appleton can do a good job, given time.

Just got in from the match and the pub, have to say I enjoyed it. Not the best footballing performance, but a lot of the players put in a lot of hard work. The substitution was strange and i have never seen anyone more dejected than Goodwillie walk off a football pitch.

At the moment, Blackburn are 38 points off the pace, with 18 games to go. So mathematically, that means in these remaining games, Blackburn MUST win 12 and draw 2 - which really means anything more than 4 losses would be virtually kissing playoff dreams goodbye.
I'm sure MA / Blackburn is aware of this, as I'm sure Blackburn fans are as well, but to win 12 out of 18 sounds really feasible. While that sounds very heartening and all, cautiously optimistic Blackburn fans should remember that, at the time of writing this, the team is currently below others like Forest, Brighton and Burnley, who also fancy their chances of getting to the playoffs.

1 point in 6 from two home games.
10 points away from even a playoff position.
And a team that is playing dreadfully.
But on the French Rover side, at least that's one more point away from the relegation zone.

Ever since Venkys gained control of the club, things have been getting worse!. Their intentions may be honourable, but the way the owners have gone about running the club has been wrong!
The Brighton game showed a marked improvement on Saturdays game with Charlton. The main question for me is where did the 97 minutes come from?. The allotted time was 95?.
That said i just hope you give Michael Appleton a chance, it really annoys me when fans come out and ask for him to be sacked!. hes been in charge for 2 games, and people want him out already!
You need to give him the chance to turn things round, theirs no quick fix at this club, but if you give him the time i am confident that the future may look brighter than its been looking!

Well that might have been the case but the ref has obviously decided to add more time due to the idiots who wouldn't give the ball back when it flew into the Blackburn End during injury time and Jake Kean jumping under the ball when kicked back to him to take a free kick. Blatant timewasting.

An added bonus was I could see their confidence growing as the game went on.
And if it hadn't been for their keeper who pulled off 3 or 4 decent saves, one of which would qualify for "Save of the season" if it had been a PL game.
Not going to criticise Goodwillie, he's probably still kicking himself.

rovers get 11 wins they will be guaranteed a playoff place, still not out of it, were not playing prem teams, in some parts of the game we need to go all out attack and practically win games in the first half with 2 or 3 goals, it comes as no suprise that the games won under bowyer were done by having at least 2 goal margin, take advantage of being a goal in front and double it, not nick a goal and sit back and inviting pressure late in the game, appleton made mention that he prefers defenders being vocal and if central defenders demanded from the central midfielders push up further and not step on their toes (even if they are tired) they could have prevented brighton even getting into the box and avoided a penalty.
Personally while I would like nothing better than a good run which would get some pride and passion back in the place I'm not so sure I would want to get involved in the play offs this season.
Too many open wounds all round and if we got to the play offs and failed they would be made worse.
IMHO it looks like Shebby is out of it and irrespective of what some people think of the current structure, Shaw, Anew et al; they are football people.
Appleton talks sense, he is being allowed to bring his own staff in, I listened to the assistant manager on Radio Rovers last night on my way to the match, bright, enthusiastic, just what we need.
So lets rebuild, consolidate and have a real go at it next season.

Unfortunately Appleton does not know who he can trust yet and he will make these mistakes as he gives certain fringe players their chance, forget the play offs this season lets build a team across the remainder of this season and then hopefully enjoy a season like Cardiff are having this year. The BEST is yet to come and I think we must support Appleton to hopefully finish the season strongly and then build on that momentum for next season.

Goodwillie kicking himself? He would miskick and on land on his arse.
Yes I was there, yes it was moderately better, yes it was a dumb substitution, yes we threw two points away by not converting the possession.
no fool like an old fool eh?
And it was a decent game.
Mind you I do agree if Goodwillie did try to kick himself he would miss.

Looks like this could work if Appleton and his fitness coach, combined with Hendrys experience as a defensive expert might pay off.
They seem to be keen on keeping Hendry for a reason and its showing on the field. Looks like weve turned the corner a bit, just needs some minor tweaking and it could all come together.

What I'm trying to say is a lot of players might not have shown their full potential, we don't know, until these players get a decent run in the team under a proper manager, playing in their proper positions with proper tactics, which we haven't seen in over two years. No player can show his best, just making the odd appearance from the substitutes bench.
The lads who had won the battle for 85 mins must be gutted that a second rate player from Scotland messed up big style. Don't blame the ref the blame lies firmly at the feet of Goodwillie. I have seen him mess up before in games as he has come on as a sub. I remember Odemwinge cutting inside the useless Scott (who again had been brought on as sub) to score their second which confirmed the rot last season.

So far I agree with everything Appleton has done so far, from bringing his own staff in (which was sorely needed as we didn't even have a fitness coach at one stage) to his comments on Rovers recruitment policies and I even agree with bring Orr back in from his loan. We are clearly thin on the ground defensively and he may as well assess all of his squad before he makes up his mind on transfers. I even agree with the decision to bring Goodwillie on last night, Brighton were clearly pushing more to get back in the game, so to combat Brighton pushing too far into our half he put Goodwillie on (who will desperate to impress) to run his lungs out and put pressure on the Brighton midfield and back-line. This to me makes total sense.
All in all a much improved performance and positive signs so far that Rovers are finally perhaps moving in the right direction. A few january bargains to freshen up the squad and a few departures and well look a much better proposition.
Up the Blues!

Disappointing to seeRovers time wasting and Kean was as much to blame for the referee adding time on by fooling around at goalkicks - hopefully he will learna lesson too

32 goals in 74 appearances for Dundee United may suggest otherwise. I would agree that he is probably not a premiership striker but along with a number of others was never given a chance by Kean. The lad has never had a consistent run of games in his rovers career other than a few minutes here and there as a sub or being played out of position by Kean on the right wing. Dundee United supporters were sorry to see him go. At 23 he still has time on his side. It is interesting to see that he is now back in the match squad under Appleton. Goodwillie always struck me as a goal poacher but he is likely to be squad member whilst Rhodes is fit

Any way, the football was much better from the team last night, obviously MA has got to grips from the start. Lot to do yet but a good start. Everyone moaning about Goodwillie should remember all the moans about previous managers putting on a defender to hold the 1-0 lead...MA kept us on the front foot last night so think about that

You cannot use the excuse of Apple is getting to know the players for the huge tactical error of putting on Goodwillie. A blind dog would have had a word with someone who knows the players and put on a defender or midfielder for the last minutes, or if you wished to have someone up front to hold the ball, you'ld put on Nunes.
Still, the players put it more effort, perhaps they realise they like we are stuck with Apple and the Venkys for a while.

He was standing behind the centre forward (I think that was what we called 'em then) waiting for the ball to come down from a long high goal kick As the ball came down, Hendry nipped from behind t' striker, stood in front of him, shoved him backwards with his ars*, chested the ball and then completed a sublime sideways pass out to t' wing! Bloody hell, says I to myself, he'll do for me...and so on to Wembley. Happy days.

He doesnt seem to have the same disillusioned stand point HB and SK had. Surely, this is a positive.
Anybody could see that, we should have won a game against one of the best footballing sides in the league and would have notched up a good home win against a team above us, had Goodwillie not made a stupid mistake that is. Had the game ended 30 secs sooner however and Rovers won, i dont think the comments on here would be any different. Because people are so obsessed with writing Venky's out, it's all they care about.

"I disagree with you totally, Goodwillie is not nor ever will be a striker."
Is it any wonder after what's happened this last two years that young players haven't reached, or come anywhere near their full potential?
I could be wrong but only time will tell if Appleton gives everyone a proper chance.
I also think we should forget promotion for this year, as I can't see Venkys ploughing vast sums of money into players this transfer window.
We should consolidate in this division and give it a good go next year.

I am sick of the apologists for such stupidity as Goodwillie showed and that includes Appleton.
To have lost out on two further points because of such callous behaviour is UNACCEPTABLE never mind apologising on Goodwillies part.
He is either:
1 - Totally thick.
2 - Totally frustrated with the lack of meaningful football in general at the moment
3 - A petulant type of person in general or
4 - Totally uneducated in defensive footballing terms.
We do have an opportunity to claim a playoff place this year and to build momentum but for players on thousands of pounds a week to not realise that acts of such stupidity can have such huge ramifications need to be fined or disciplined.
If we do not go up this season forget about consolidating, building etc for next season as a boat load of clubs will also be doing that (Leeds, Notts Forest, Leicester and if Newcastle QPR or the likes come down don't think that they will not be a force to be reckoned with next season either.
Instead of Appleton apologising for Goodwillie's pathetic action it should have been the complete and total opposite.
All the good work is negated if individual "Self Discipline" lets the team club and fans down.
Others also need to be aware of this for how CKR managed to stay on against Wolves after only 20 30 minutes etc is beyond me.

We will always be the bigger better club and the reason I know this is because the comments about Rovers news are always numerous whilst Burnley's are often non existent. Of those Burnley fans who do post, they post about Blackburn Rovers.
Michael Appleton should note that the penalty was conceded in the extra time added on by the referee for the time the idiots in the lower tier of the Blackburn End decided that they would keep hold of the ball during the 5 minutes he already announced.
Hope they are satisfied, their stupidity cost Rovers 2 points

He was standing behind the centre forward (I think that was what we called 'em then) waiting for the ball to come down from a long high goal kick As the ball came down, Hendry nipped from behind t' striker, stood in front of him, shoved him backwards with his ars*, chested the ball and then completed a sublime sideways pass out to t' wing! Bloody hell, says I to myself, he'll do for me...and so on to Wembley. Happy days.
As for my eyesight failing, well thank God it isn't, and if there was 12,000 odd at Ewood last night, I'll camp out.

Does' t really matter we only got a point but disapointing to lose two points in the closing seconds of the match. Hope we learn from that, and take it on board for the future. We have almost no chance of qualifiying for the playoffs, as we will have to play nearly all of the teams above us AWAY and nearly all of the teams below us at HOME. so I think even if we were in the top six, it would take an enormous amount of luck to gain promotion. Lets hope we can build on this and put in a much better challenge next year. Hope Michael Appleton finds the money to buy an old Corporation Bus to park in front of the goals in the off season, because we need something better than we have at the moment, to stop conceding these late goals.

No !!!
Yes it cost us heavily, but the fact of the matter is we were only winning from a penalty and as good as we played, we failed to score a second to give us the cushion we needed.
The penalty we got was a soft one anyway, many wouldnt have got it and a 1-1 result, whilst deeply disappointing both in the manner it happened and the timing, was a fair result at the end of the day for both teams.
MA is still playing someone else's squad. Plenty of names have been mentioned and we need to move on from this defeat and see who he brings in to change the dynamics of the squad. Murphy with his head in his hands yesterday opitimised everything the players and freezing cold fans were feeling. Goodwillie walking off the field, his dejected face said it all.
Easy to judge the team and be negative, but as many who attended have said on here and around the net, the positives of seeing a team playing its heart out for 98 mins gave much comfort that we don't need a wholesale firesale of the squad. The team were playing for the manager and trying to prove they should be kept and if MA can do that within two games, we can at least take heart that better results from more consistent play will come soon enough.
As I said recently, stop thinking play-offs and start believing in a team that isnt heading further down the table. If promotion isnt within our reach this season, we should be looking for a team that not only challenge for promotion next season, but stay up and win games rather than become the newest premiership 3 point gifting battering rams we became last season.
For all those complaining about the state of the club, if MA gets his transfers this next week, try coming back and getting behind the team and being the 12th man rather sitting behind a keyboard whining like a spoilt brat about whose fault it was we got relegated.
I noticed, the talk of "administration if we dont get promoted" and "asset stripping" are popping up everywhere, now the Trust goons have lost their only voice in Shebby "you know" Singh in the club.
Shame on you. Get behind the team you bunch of day dreaming no-hopers.

It's frustrating how so many Rovers fans are becoming the caricatures of what people think moaning Rovers fans are. Look at the facts, Venky's aren't going to leave, the new manager on the face of it at least looks better than the other two. Support it or dont, dont just write a list of Names followed by out and then spend the rest of your time thinking about how it was in the good old days. Some people go and pay to watch the rubbish dished up at Ewood some decide to listen to the commentary/read press reports - all are entitled to commenT - but dont forget this, there are as many fans staying 'away' from Ewood as there are 'attending' (av att 10k stay aways appr 10k) and this is because of the way the club is being run by the Board/Owners and as one of the stay aways I will continue to comment about the match from commentary/press reports and will continue to sign off as I always do until these clowns are gone - many of us have made this decision and will stick by it until major changes are made - and not on the cheap!!!!!!!!!!!! Michael Appleton should note that the penalty was conceded in the extra time added on by the referee for the time the idiots in the lower tier of the Blackburn End decided that they would keep hold of the ball during the 5 minutes he already announced.

HA HA HA. So you base the size of a club on comments in the local Blackbuurrrn rag!?
Tranmere Rovers get more comments than Man U in the liverpool echo. Does it make them bigger!!!!???

Cos that boycott till Kean goes is dragging on a bit.

Oh dear glentoran, oh very dear. You are the most warped of the warped gurners aren't you?
Do you want me to send you that link of who's the most successful club again? Do you want me to send you that link of who's won the most derby games? Do you want me to send you a link of who's had the highest average attendances since records began? I can't be ar5ed to be honest and I'm bored of your desperate and comical attempts to comfort your dull mind that Bonleh are bigger and better than Rovers.
Tell yer what if that's what you want to believe then I'll let you off. It can be our little secret but we know the truth really don't we.

No !!!
RTID.
I was / have never been away.
I don't hide behind a keyboard either.
You have answered my point by sympathising with Goodwillie.
I don't care what his body language is after the deed is done we would be in a healthier state with a further two points.
I am looking positively by stating that I believe we can get into the playoffs and move forward even promoted through the playoffs if we can build a head of steam with a few key signings.
I would also take promotion with a weakish squad for their are always 6 or 7 poor teams in the premiership at any given season - look at this years sides.
Anyway good to talk footballing matters.

Berg brought him back into the squad
Hendry gave him personal defensive training.
MR Desai, still reeling from the snowball to the head thought he was seeing double on tv and rang Shebby the Snake to have one of the Olssens removed.

Realisitically its going no-where is it? Same owners, same clueless management, same type of second rate manager, same set of pay-day players.
Forget the play-offs - we'll be lucky to avoid the drop at this rate. Can't believe how so much damage has been done in two years.
Still nice to see Venky's gauging the mood so well by arriving in their Rollers and leaving after 65mins. Great PR and they must be congratualting themselves on another fantastic appointment with their PR firm. NOT! Nothing like endearing yourselves to your paying customers.
