A FARMER has been praised for his quick thinking after a fuel fire broke out on his land.

Fire crews were called to Halsteads Farm, Rimington, after a blaze began when a farmer was using an electric pump to siphon diesel from a fuel store into a container on the back of his trailer.

The pump caught fire while in use and after calling the emergency services the farmer jumped back into his vehicle to move the trailer away from the diesel store.

The farm outbuilding, vehicle trailer, a 1,000 litre fuel tank and electric fuel pump all suffered severe damage in the incident, at 2.45pm on Saturday.

Firefighters said that a more serious incident may have been prevented by the farmers decision to move the trailer away from the fuel store.
