PASSENGER numbers through Carnforth Station have rocketed by more than 40,000 in nearly 10 years, according to new statistics.

Lancashire County Council say 191, 306 used it in 2011/12 - compared to 149,649 in 2004/5.

An extra 10,147 people are now said to be using Silverdale Station than they were, and 24,601 more are using Bare Lane.

Morecambe and Lunesdale MP, David Morris, believes it makes the case for more trains stopping at Carnforth.

Mr Morris said: 'In recent times I have worked with the Carnforth community to promote Carnforth Station as a tourist destination and as a green way to travel into the Lake District.

'The increase in passenger numbers further backs up my calls for more connectivity at Carnforth.

'The Secretary of State for Transport is currently consulting with Virgin Trains about picking up passengers in Carnforth.

'If this gets the go-ahead I hope that even more people will use Carnforth. I would encourage constituents to write to Virgin Trains in support of Carnforth Station.'

The figures also suggest that nearly 24,964 more people are also using Morecambe Station than they did in 2004/5.
