Children from across Accrington are being invited to help create a centrepiece for Accrington Town Square at Haworth Art Gallery.

Children aged between four and 12 are invited to get involved and bring their very best arts and crafts skills to help create designs for temporary fences that will take centre stage on Accrington Town Square.

The temporary fences, hoardings, will be installed around Accrington Market Hall whilst it undergoes construction works in 2024, adding colour and excitement during the transformation.

Construction works are to be carried out on the three Town Centre Investment Plan buildings: Accrington Market, Burton’s Chambers, and Market Chambers.

The workshops which begin this Thursday are free to attend and will be delivered this half-term by local artist, Jessica Jayne, who will help children create vibrant designs inspired by local history and heritage.

There is no need to book, and the sessions are on the following dates:

  • Thursday, October 26, 12.30pm to 3pm
  • Friday, October 27, 12.30pm to 3pm
  • Sunday, October 29, 12.30pm to 3pm

Cllr Mohammed Younis, portfolio holder for levelling up at Hyndburn Council, said: “We are so pleased to be able to partner with Haworth Art Gallery on this project, helping us to support the cultural enrichment of the borough at large whilst helping us to involve the youngest members of Hyndburn in the ongoing Town Centre Investment Plan.

“The changes that are coming to our borough are for everyone, so naturally everyone is invited to take part.”

The children who participate will also be able to print their unique design onto smaller pieces of paper, to take a part of their artwork home as a keepsake.

Gillian Berry, Haworth Art Gallery manager, said: “Just one of the reasons that art is so special is that it has the power to connect communities and preserve the heritage of a region.

“Everyone here at Haworth are so excited to be able to involve the local community in this project, giving children a chance to show off their very best art and craft skills for all to enjoy whilst celebrating our local history.”
