The owners of a glamping business in the Ribble Valley are looking to build further holiday accommodation to keep up with demand.

Mr and Mrs Berry run Hedgerow Luxury Glamping near the village of Horton and have done so since the autumn of 2019.

They were originally granted permission for six holiday pods as they established their business but are now looking to add a further eight due to increased demand.

As well as running the glamping business, Mr and Mrs Berry operate a dairy farm at Hoober Farm, around half a mile from the application site.

A planning statement submitted to Ribble Valley Borough Council said: “The demand for holiday accommodation of the type proposed has significantly grown during recent years, because of the recent restrictions upon foreign travel, the desire for ‘staycation’ type holidays, and the popularity of weekend or ‘mini breaks’ in secluded areas of the countryside.

“They [the applicants] are aware of the attractive nature of the Ribble Valley as a tourist destination, and the proven success of their business to date has confirmed that the demand for visitor accommodation of this nature, in this area, is strong.

“The small scale of the proposals also accords with the constraints being experienced by holidaymakers by reason of affordability, where larger and more expensive holiday rental properties are rendered unavailable to couples and retirees due to cost.

“The development of the chalets represents a realistic and affordable business proposition for the applicants, whilst also satisfying a demand for this type of holiday.”

The plans were approved by the council with the usual conditions of starting the project within three years and sticking to the proposals submitted.

They also said in a decision notice: “The camping pods hereby approved shall be restricted to holiday accommodation use only and shall not be occupied at any time as permanent residential accommodation or as a person’s main place of residence.

“The owners/operators of the site shall maintain an up-to-date register of the names of all occupiers of the individual holiday cottages on the site, and of their main home addresses, and shall make this information available, on request, to the local planning authority.”
