THERE aren’t many people who would be capable of keeping England fans from a key Euro 2012 game, certainly not many Welshmen.

But anyone who had the choice between watching Rhod Gilbert’s latest tour hit Blackburn, or Danny Welbeck secure a 3-2 win over Sweden, had no regrets about their decision to head to King George’s Hall for a night of non-stop laughter.

The venue was packed to see the self-confessed sarcastic stand-up comic tell the tale of his unwanted tattoo - his unwanted flaming Battenburg tattoo to be precise - and the impact it had on his life, and rocky relationship with his long-term girlfriend.

There are hilarious diversions along the course of his story, via his local Tesco Metro near Cardiff, where an argument about jacket potatoes coming in packs of two ensued because he was dining alone.

There were typical Rhod-style rants about Great Western Rail services and the tradesmen working on his house, which most of the crowd could relate to.

A master of audience interaction, Gilbert had the sell-out crowd in the palm of his hand for almost three hours, hanging on his every word.

Even his attempts at a northern accent - with no vowels or consonants involved - failed to cause offence.

Heckles were friendly and light hearted, and welcomed with open arms.

It’s hard not to like him. It’s impossible not to laugh.
