Sometimes games just come out of nowhere. No hype, no hint of what is to come.

That was the case with Portal when it hit the shelves within The Orange Box collection.

Now we get Portal 2. It comes with the hype and the inevitability. We saw it coming a mile off but there is one thing you can’t take away from this sequel: it’s amazing.

The first game was the surprise hit of 2007 and it fused puzzle solving with first-person action. This new game is an expansion of the tiny debut, adding a few new mechanics, including the use of faith plates, gels and co-op goals.

Valve has also added a lot more personality including a hilarious new robot companion, Wheatley, voiced by Stephen Merchant of The Office and Extras fame.

But at its heart is the finest execution of physics-based action adventure puzzling of its generation, backed up by the critical acclaim it received at the 2010 E3 entertainment expo, where accolades such as ‘Best Overall Game’ and ‘Most Anticipated Game for 2011’ were being pegged against it.

Portal 2 is a terrific teleporting title that truly breaks new ground in next generation gaming by expanding that infectious recipe of innovative gameplay, immersive story and creative inclusion of music.

The introduction of multiplayer co-op game modes really takes Portal 2 to the next level, and you’d be mad to miss out on this mind-bending masterpiece. Rating: 5/5
