The cheeky-by-nature star of BBC comedy How Not to Live Your Life ventured up north to test run his new show.

On screen, the wannabe stud is no stranger to parading round with his kit off and guitar on, so with this in mind, I was keen to see what he had to offer in his stand-up show.

The first half was a bit of audience interaction and funny stories which he claims are all true. They might just be too.

When comedians venture into 'doing songs' it can be painful to watch.

They get carried away with their musical prowess and end up losing the crowd and boring the pants off them.

Not Dan Clark though.

Despite inviting another guitarist on stage with him for most of the second half, which was worrying at first for potential boredom reasons, Clark announced part way through that he was the man responsible for all the music from How Not to... , including the expertly catchy theme tune which prompted an eruption of cheers from the 150-strong audience.

Now we knew who he was, it went from good to brilliant.

The rapport the two of them had on stage was a pleasure to observe, and the result was some excellent little dittys, including my personal favourite, Justin Bieber, where they tell him to get lost, in much less polite terms, then get the audience to join in.

All the songs are short, some only a line or two, much like many of his jokes, which is quite refreshing compared with some epic tales you sometimes have to endure.

Clark explains how impatient he is; obsessively checking his phone, emails and messages all day when he should be working and explains how ridiculous kisses are at the end of text messages when transferred into everyday life.

Occasionally he has a little chuckle at his own quip, but not in an annoying way, more in a Billy Connelly way which proves quite endearing.

He seemed quite apologetic about his performance not being a polished one and promised that it would be slick on the tour. I think it was the perfectionist in him but no-one else in the room seemed bothered by the odd out-loud thought like: "I'll probably scrap that one then" and: "That's getting cut from the tour." It just added to his rugged charm.

To top off the night, I spotted his co-star from the first series of How Not To..., the beautiful but unobtainable Abby, played by Sinéad Moynihan in the audience checking out his latest offering.

She seemed to approve of his new material, and the rest of the punters were certainly in agreement.

* Dan Clark's tour comes to Manchester Dancehouse on May 6.
