Lancashire Telegraph review by Richard Carr on 11th February 2009,

EATING out often seems an excuse for diners to lose their manners for an evening and pick faults with staff who are trying their best.

Unfortunately, sometimes it is easy to see why customers begin to lose patience at the end of a disappointing visit.

Our table of eight celebrating a family birthday was seated promptly then left for 10 minutes without waiter service.

It isn’t a good start when the group have all chosen from the menu without even ordering a drink.

The menu is impressive in scope but on the Wednesday evening we visited, there was a limited choice of pizza sizes.

This forced a re-think and a further wait for drinks which eventually arrived about 20 minutes after seating.

The soft drinks may have had free refills but they were flat even after being changed, so the offer was politely declined.

Images of Peter Kay’s ‘Rola Cola’ sprung to mind and I was only grateful I’d gone for the red wine instead.

No fault could be levelled at the speed both courses arrived, which is why the delays everywhere else were puzzling.

The pizzas, pastas and salads got a thumbs-up, although, as you would expect in a chain restaurant, they were very middle of the road.

A mix-up with the bill seemed inevitable after having two waiters and settling the problem was a little difficult.

By this point the evening was on the brink of entering family folklore, but we felt many of the problems were just down to a lack of experienced staff.

I didn’t forget my manners but by the end I understood why people sometimes do, because more than a few simple things going wrong can really spoil what is meant to be a fun family occasion.

The verdict

An evening spent talking to the staff more than each other.
