Review: Turners, Barrowford

IS it a wine shop? Is it a deli? Is it a coffee shop? If truth be told Turners is all three under one roof.

If you can grab a window seat in this popular Barrowford venue you get the chance to look out on to a busy main road if you’re so inclined.

Or, away from that - in a high-sided booth especially - you could easily imagine yourself to be in lower Manhattan or London's Soho, such is the soft lighting and unique nature of the furnishings.

Cheese dominates the menu, so be warned (particularly if you don’t ike cheese!) - it is part-deli afterall. But you don't have to be a cheese lover, or even a wine lover, to appreciate Turners.

I was drawn to the homemade soup of the day, which was more a bucket than a bowl of delicious, piping hot curried parsnip.

My husband opted for the simple, but satisfying, cheese on toast, served with tomato chutney - on the side, so entirely up to the individual to use it as a spread, dip or even leave well alone.

At £4.95 each, our orders were perhaps a little over-priced for what wer primarily overgrown snacks. But that’s my only criticism of Turners.

For bigger appetites there are pizza-style flatbreads, for smaller appetites olives, breads and dips. Or you could just enjoy a coffee.

A large latte and a large cappuccino completed our lunch - all for £14.90.

A word too about the service which was first rate – attentive without being over-fussy.

Other establishments could take note.
