Review: Blakey’s Cafe Bar, Blackburn
BLAKEY’S Cafe Bar is a morning, afternoon, evening and weekend place, offering a venue to suit your mood.
It’s a popular eating place during the day — and it starts early, offering a breakfast menu from 8.30am — stages shows and concerts after dark and transforms into a lively night spot at weekends.
We called in at lunchtime to try its extensive menu, offered at very reasonable prices.
There are also discounts for large number of workers, students and Beez card holders.
Blakey’s, part of King George’s Hall, has recently undergone refurbishment and the result is a stylish bistro-style venue, complete with leather sofas, that offers a bustling atmosphere.
The menu has some new additions, as well as old favourites alongside daily specials, which are made to order with fresh ingredients, locally sourced where possible.
I opted for a fresh market salad — it was fresh and plentiful — topped with lots of roast turkey breast and home-made coleslaw, at £5.75, while my dining partner was tempted by the speciality pepperoni and mozzarella hot sandwich, served with peppers and red onion, on a choice of bread, for £5.25.
And though there was no pepperoni, it didn’t prove a problem for staff – they packed it with chorizo instead.
The most expensive item is chicken and mushroom pie, at £6.75, or you can opt for chunky chilli and hand battered fish at £6.50.
Burgers are £4.95 and light bites £4.95.
It was obvious Blakey’s is a popular venue for many, be they shoppers calling in for a coffee and cake, workers needing lunch or business folk wanting to chat away from the office.
It makes for an enjoyable dining experience, which is enhanced by friendly staff — and generous portions of good food.
