In the second half, Burnley’s back three of Till, Kelly and Crowley began to open up thanks largely to some good rucking and tackling by the forwards.

And a third try soon followed when a quick penalty by Simon Finnan gave captain Nino Angelone the chance to power over.

Finnan then chipped through and Till won the foot race to score with Steve Kent – returning after a lengthy spell out through injury – adding the conversion. From the resulting kick off, Burnley forwards took it forward creating quick ball for Finnan to go through and again release Crowley for is second of the game.

However, the final try was the best as Ives linked with Crowley who released full back Kelly, who danced down the touchline to round the final defender to complete the scoring.

Player coach Finnan said: “It was pleasing to see Steve Kent returning after a lengthy injury lay off and see Dave Lord come on and scrummaged effectively while Joe Till was back on the wing.”
