IAN Bibby has already turned his attentions to the Commonwealth Games road race after being denied a possible time trial medal following a series of mechanical issues.

Going off as the penultimate rider and the last man with a realistic shot at a medal, the 31-year-old was among the fastest three riders at the first two checkpoints.

But issues with his gears at the summit of the second climb led to the JLT-Condor rider dropping down the timesheet.

He eventually came home ninth, completing the 38.5km course in a time of 50mins 43.88secs - 2mins 30.84secs behind eventual Australian winner Cameron Meyer.

The bronze medallist at last year’s national road race championships and 2015 winner of the National Circuit Championship, Bibby went into the race as a potential medallist.

“I started off alright but had a few mechanicals. One at the top of the climb but then it kept coming off at the front a bit as well - that’s life,” said Blackburn-based Bibby.

“It’s hard to tell how I was feeling in the time trial because I’ve not done too many of them, but I think the legs are alright for the road race and I’m keen to get stuck into that now on Saturday.”

“The climbs were alright so for the road race it should be good.

“We’ve not it too much but we’ve got Adam [Blythe], myself and Tom Stewart who has been going really well, too.”

Anna Hopkin was denied a second medal at the Commonwealth Games after England finished in fourth place in the 4x100 medley relay.

The Chorley swimmer, who won bronze in the 4x100m freestyle, missed out on another trip to the podium after they were beaten to third place by Wales.

The 21-year-old anchored the England team and despite clocking 54.47secs she failed to catch Wales’ Kathryn Greenslade.

Despite missing out, it has been a successful Games for the Hopkin who also reached the final of the 50m and 100m freestyle.

Fliss Pickard got off to a confident start in the TT6-10 table tennis, winning 3-0 in her opening Group One match against Vero Nime of Papua New Guinea.

The 23-year-old from Burnley clinched an impressive 11-0, 11-2, 11-2 victory and faces Australia’s Melissa Tapper in her second game today.

Pickard completes her group matches tomorrow when she plays India’s Maitreyee Sarkar hoping to progress to Friday’s semi finals.
