RAMSBOTTOM United got the better of play-off chasing Clitheroe in Saturday's Evo-Stik North derby as they secured a 1-0 home victory.

The opening exchanges were fairly even with neither team troubling the opposing keeper in the first 10 minutes as Clitheroe looked to close the eight point gap to the final play off position.

The Rams created the best first half opportunities with Jerome Wright and Sam Madeley seeing efforts blocked.

Wright then fired over before Phil Dean's strike sailed wide as the hosts continued to enjoy the better of the game.

Kurt Willoughby had Clitheroe's best chances with home keeper Sam Ashton twice denying the Blues frontman.

Willoughby again threatened after the break before Ashton superbly denied George West's low drive.

Luke Jordan then hit the post for the Rams before the home side broke the deadlock when Wright headed home Spencer Jordan's cross.

The home side were able to see the game out comfortably to rise to 15th while Clitheroe's play-off hopes took a serious dent.

Elsewhere, Colne were held to a 0-0 home draw by play-off rivals Tadcaster Albion which leaves Steve Cunningham's six points off the top six with a game in hand.

In the National League North, second half goals from Alex Newby and Marcus Carver helped Chorley to a 2-1 win at AFC Telford United to keep their National League North play-off hopes alive.

Elliott Newby scored a late consolation from the spot for the hosts.

In the Hallmark Security League First Division, Bacup Borough secured a fine 5-2 home win over Stockport Town.

A Matthew Bryan penalty and goals from Nathan Tayo and Jason Jarrett had Borough three up at the break before the visitors rallied with two goals of their own.

But Joshua Walne scored twice in the last 10 minutes to secure the victory.

Nelson also picked up three points at home as they defeated Alsager Town 3-1.

Jamie Wynne's brace and Daniel Mort saw the Admirals to victory.

In the Premier Division, Padiham, Barnoldswick and AFC Darwen saw their games called off.
