COLNE took a giant step towards a place in the Evo-Stik League First Division North play-offs after Michael Morrison’s last minute goal handed them a 2-1 derby win over Clitheroe.

The result lifts Steve Cunningham’s side to fourth heading into the final weekend of the season with the Reds knowing that three points from their game away at Droylsden will secure them a shot at promotion.

For Clitheroe, the chance of a top five place all but went with the defeat with Simon Haworth’s side ninth, three points off the play-offs and needing an improbable set of last day results, plus a goal difference swing, to gatecrash the party.

Colne went ahead at Holt House when Christopher Lynch tapped home after just seven minutes but Dimi Tuanzebe brought the visitors level with a header on the half hour.

And it looked like the spoils would be shared until Morrison produced a moment of magic in added time, arrowing a left footed shot into the top corner to spark wild scenes of celebration among the home supporters.

Elsewhere, Ramsbottom ended their poor run of form with a thumping 4-0 home success over Radcliffe Borough.

Max Hazeldine opened the scoring 10 minutes before the break before Ryan Salmon missed a penalty for the hosts inside the first minute of the second half.

But the home side quickly put that disappointment to one side when Grant Spencer doubled their lead with a free kick before Salmon did get his goal, heading home a third.

And Simon Gaskell completed the scoring 18 minutes from time when he converted Ramsbottom’s second spot kick of the afternoon.

In the Hallmark Security League Premier Division, Nelson were relegated despite battling to a 2-2 draw with neighbours Padiham.

Morgan Crowther put the Admirals in front before goals from James Dean and Mark Young either side of the break turned the match in Padiham’s favour.

Thomas Keelings levelled for the hosts but it wasn’t enough to give them a stay execution.

Elsewhere, AFC Darwen are not yet safe from relegation after they were beaten 5-1 at Atherton Collieries with Nick Hepple on target for the visitors.

Barnoldswick were beaten 3-0 at New Mills while Bacup Borough’s first division game at home to AFC Blackpool was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
