GREAT Britain canoe star Jon Schofield believes he is on track for the Olympics after finishing seventh in the Canoe Sprint World Cup meeting in Germany.

East Lancashire's Schofield, who won bronze at London 2012, has already confirmed his place in the the British squad for Rio in the K2 200m category alongside partner Liam Heath.

And the pair took to the water for their first international final of the year last weekend in Duisburg finishing in seventh place, 0.7 seconds adrift of the winners Saúl Cravitto and Cristian Toro.

The duo only have two more races before the Olympics with this weekend's World Cup meeting in the Czech Republic the first of them before next month's European Championships in Moscow.

And Schofield, from Clitheroe, believes the pair are on the path to Olympic success.

“We had a good race and it was a good experience to get out racing against the top guys in the world and find out our form,” he said.

“Training has been great over the winter and everything we can see suggests we are moving forwards and getting faster all the time.

“We are on great form and it’s just a case of maximising that all the way through to August this year.

“We’ve only got two races left before the big one now so it’s all becoming very real and I’m looking forward to it.”
