LAURA Massaro produced a stunning fightback to beat long term rival and former world number one Nicol David in a thrilling US Open quarter final clash.

The 31-year-old from Chorley showed her true grit and determination to recover from 2-0 down to win 8-11, 4-11, 11-6, 11-8, 12-10 in a match that lasted more than 70 minutes at the Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Despite being the undisputed star of women’s squash - David was only recently toppled as word number one after nine years at the top - Massaro has a good record against the Malaysian superstar.

It was a repeat of the 2015 Allam British Open in Hull where Massaro came back from the brink of defeat to beat David.

“I’m really happy to turn that around, coming back from 2-0 down once against Nicol is hard enough but to do it twice in one year is something I’m really pleased about,” said Massaro.

“I fight to the very last point with everyone I play against and over the years my belief against her has got stronger and I know I can trouble her.

“I know from the British Open when I last beat Nicol 3-2 that you’ve then got to back it up in the next match.

“I have done a lot of summer training so I have confidence in my physical ability. So it’s case of getting my head down and recovering as well as I can.”

Massaro know plays Omneya Kawy for a place in the final with the winner to face either Nour El Tayeb or Camille Serme.
