FRUSTRATED Burnley manager Steve Cotterill insisted "there's work to be done" after the Clarets suffered a disappointing defeat at newly promoted Scunthorpe United.

Burnley conceded twice in the second half, putting paid to their early first-half dominance in which new sigings David Unsworth and Clarke Carlisle both had chances to put them in front.

And Cotterill was dis-appointed with the manner in which The Iron scored both of their goals, to mark their first home game in English football's second tier for 43 years with a win.

"We could have won the game in the first 20-25 minutes, and I think for that period of time they were hanging on in there," he said.

"Then all of a sudden we've given them some encourage-ment to come into the game. They've had a couple of chances and Gabor (Kiraly) has come to try to take a couple and then could have gone in at half-time 2-0 down.

"We were marginally better in the second half, but not enough.

"I'm disappointed with the result. We spoke and also showed them last night that we didn't want to get done on the break, and we've been done on the break. And also we didn't want to get done on a quick free kick, where they've had an opportunity last week against Charlton from the same side of the pitch. A quick free kick where (Paul) Hayes has had a header. And we've been done by a goal there two minutes after half-time. So I'm a little bit disappointed.

"It might have been a different game if we'd scored early, but it's all ifs and buts. I don't think we can go too much into that.

"I just think, at the end of the day, we haven't taken our opportunities and our dominance on board, maybe, in the first 20-25 minutes. And then we've been made to pay for it."

The last time Burnley suffered defeat was on their pre-season tour of Austria, when two freak early goals put them on the back foot against Romanian outfit Prefab Modelu, and they went on to lose 2-1.

On that occasion Cotterill was pleased with the response from his players in their efforts to get something out of the game, but felt that attitude was not replicated against Scunthorpe.

"I'm a bit disappointed with our fighting spirit, and I'm a bit disappointed with our knowledge after we've given, we feel, enough knowledge," he said.

"In terms of chances created, I was pleased but I'm bitterly disappointed that, in terms of chances created we haven't scored a goal.

"All in all, Scunthorpe probably deserved their win, so we've got to give credit to them.

"It wasn't, obviously, an ideal fixture with it being their first (Championship) game here, when their crowd would have been up for it.

"It might have been better in the season maybe, if they'd had a few up and down results.

"But having said that, we'll have to take our hats off to them. They've been a team that's been used to winning, and to be fair to them after they got their first goal they kept it very tight, even though they got their second they kept it very tight and didn't give us too many opportunities.

"But I'm disappointed with us really.

"We've got work to do."
