AFC JOLLY claimed the honours in the inaugural Burnley Sunday League Super Cup final as they overcame Weir FC with a 2-0 victory.

The competition, played for the first time, saw four sides compete for honours with the winners of the league’s cup competitions from 2015-16 invited to take part.

And organiser John Pilling hailed the event as a success, hinting that it could return in the future.

Pilling said: “The main reason we had it was to celebrate 50 years of the league.

“We haven’t decided whether or not we will do it again but it is something we will be looking at.”

The event raised more than £500 for Pendleside Hospice.

The four teams began the afternoon at Padiham FC playing two semi-finals in the straight knockout format.

AFC Jolly overcame Craven Heiffer in the opening semi-final with a 1-0 victory courtesy of a Sam Skinner goal.

It was a slightly easier passage for Weir FC who overcame Padiham Shakespeare 3-1.

Ryan Graham netted a brace for Weir including the goal of the tournament while Sam Taylor was also on target. Adam Simcoe struck for Shakespeare.

In the final Skinner was on target again for Jolly with Tom Riley adding a second as they completed a 2-0 victory over Weir FC.

The last-four matches were played over 35 minutes with the final over 45 minutes.

The Burnley Sunday League season starts this weekend with one new side making a total of 21 for the 2016-17 campaign, with the league set to have three divisions.
