ROSEGROVE Football Club could expand its annual summer tournament to two days following another highly successful event - despite the wind and rain.

More than 750 youngsters from 70 teams from across the North West and beyond travelled to Burnley to take part in the popular summer competition.

Committee members of the club will now have to decide to expand the competition to two days to accommodate the increasing number of teams interested in taking part.

Some clubs have already expressed an interest in returning next year.

The competition was held the club’s home ground at Habergham Playing Fields on Kiddrow Lane.

The 70 plus teams that took part - including an impressive turn out of 15 from Rosegrove - the poor weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the day.

The growing reputation of the event saw teams travel from across Lancashire and as far as Merseyside and Yorkshire.

Ans it proved to be a day to remember with children aged from under sixes to under 11s taking part in the spectacular event that included a bouncy castles and a small funfair to entertain the young players between games.

The club’s organisers and volunteers had to help with a few stuck cars as the rain got the better of the field that was used for car parking, but eventually all 350 cars managed to get home.

The Mayor of Burnley, Jeff Sumner, was also on hand to present the medals to all players, and hand out the winners and fair play award trophies to the winning teams at the end of the day.

Rosegrove Football Club chairperson, Guy Owen said: ‘“Eventhough the conditions, due to the weather, made it hard, the club’s volunteers did a fantastic job. The club’s coaches and committee started at 6am and didn’t get packed up until 8pm.

"It’s a very long day but seeing great football and so many smiling, happy children doing something they love makes it all worthwhile.”

The club is self funded by the subs paid by the players for training and games.

All those involved including the committee and coaches are volunteers, putting a lot of time into making the club such a happy, enjoyable and safe environment. Rosegrove FC believes football can and should be enjoyed by anyone, no matter what a player’s ability.
