FORMER Burnley stars turned out in force to help St Theodore’s Old Boys raise £2,000 for Pendleside Hospice in honour of a much loved teacher who passed away in 2014.

The Mick Ennis Memorial Match saw the Vintage Clarets, including ex-Turf Moor favourites Paul Weller, George Oghani, John Deary and Gerry Harrison, take on St Theodore’s at Burnley Belvedere Sports Ground.

Nick Palich, a former pupil at St Theodore’s High School and who helped organise the game, said: “Mr Ennis was a very popular teacher at St Theodore’s who taught there for 38 years and we wanted to honour him.

“We also set out to raise as much money as possible for Pendleside Hospice and people have donated very generously indeed.”

Born in Burnley, Mr Ennis studied at St John’s and St Theodore’s schools before embarking on a teaching career.

Mr Ennis spent almost four decades at St Theodore’s and Blessed Trinity, during which time he guided eight football teams to Lancashire Cup finals, and to one national final.

He also managed cricket teams to three Lancashire cricket finals, and taught England and Lancashire cricketer Jimmy Anderson.

He was also secretary at Burnley Belvedere Cricket Club, where he also played for 20 years.

Mr Palich added: “It was an extremely poignant day also following the recent death of Ian Britton.

“It was a very special moment to see Ian’s three sons playing in their dad’s memory.

“Our aim now is to make the Mick Ennis Memorial Trophy an annual fixture and we are already planning for next year.”

In a keenly contested match, the Vintage Clarets edged past St Theodore’s 2-1 with striker Peter Mumby scoring both goals. Dean Stowe replied for St Theodore’s.
