ENTWISTLE are aiming to be the surprise package in the Blackburn Sunday League and secure promotion at the first attempt.

The Darwen side have gone in to Division Three but manager Adam Pickup insists his new side have no intention of staying around too long.

And they demonstrated just what a force they could be following a hard fought but deserved 2-0 win against promotion candidates Ewood Blues on Sunday.

Second half goals from Kane Duckworth, a header, and a tidy finish by Daniel Pickup saw Entwistle kick off their campaign with a win.

Neil Foy was named man of the match.

“We can be the dark horses in this division,” said Pickup. “Not many teams know too much about us, we are an unknown quantity and I think we are good enough to go up.

“We want to finish in the top three but we will be aiming to win the title.”

The Blues had already one win under their belt going in to the contest but Entwistle made sure their 100 per cent start to the season ended their as they took the points in a keenly contested game where the outcome was in doubt right until the final whistle.

The referee Oliver Robinson acquitted himself very well in only his second senior game.

Elsewhere in the division, Brown Cow Olympic got their first points with a 3-0 win over Rishton Rangers, while Sunnybank recorded their second win, beating Prince of Wales 3-2.

Brown Cow put their first points on the board with a 2-1 win over newcomers The Crown 2-1. It was also a game that stood out for other reasons as it was refereed by Atlanta Chambers who was making her first appearance in senior football and only the second time the BSFL have had a game refereed by a female official.

There was only one game in Division One and early season pace setters, Intack enjoyed a convincing 4-0 win over Beehive. Intack, who were runners-up to Clifton in the season opening John Haydock Memorial Trophy, have won one and drawn one of their opening two games.

Craven Heifer are the early leaders in Division Two as they remain unbeaten, with Whinney Hill Colts close on their heels, Heifer beat Anchor 4-0, while the Colts went nap against previously unbeaten Hare & Hounds.

Brownhill edged out Helmshore Harriers 3-1 while Stanley Ultras beat Oswaldtwistle Immanuel 4-3. Stanhill WMC had a convincing 7-1 win over Park FC who have found life in the second flight difficult this season.

Away from the league and there was mixed fortunes in the LFA Sunday Trophy with three teams making it through to the third round.

Station enjoyed a 7-1 win over Rochdale outfit Kirkholt while Whinney Hill had an excellent 5-1 win away to Blackpool side FC Hassra Fylde. Crown Paints won 8-2 away to Ashton on Ribble.

However, Clifton’s hopes of county glory is over for another season after losing on penalties against Preston side Ashton Villa.

Division Three’s Rosehill gave a good account of themselves before losing 3-2 to Sandcastle Care Colts.
