COLNE Badminton Club's Under 16s have completed a brilliant hat-trick of honours as they ended the season in style.

Having already won the Premier League 4 Sport National final and the East Lancs Junior Badminton League crown, Colne Under 16s First team added the Inter Performance Centre Raw League Two title as well.

As a Manchester Performance Centre satellite club - training once a month with Dave Jackson, Manchester PC coach - the Colne were invited to enter two teams in an end-of-season tournament.

The competition format consisted of three groups in a round robin and then a play-off between the winners of each group.

Colne Firsts were drawn in Group Two with the Seconds drawn in Group One.

The Firsts included, Theo Rowan, Chris Kay, George Connolly, Billy Jacks, and Merrill Tsang, won all of their group matches - keeping all but two games to single figures - without losing a single game to top the table.

Colne Seconds which included Michael Fisher, James Dale, Ruairi Sweeney, Zoe Smith and Sam Naughton Baldwin only lost four games in a very tight group to just miss out on the play-offs.

In the play-offs, Colne were up against a Yorkshire PC packed with county players but they were far from overawed in a match then went right down to the wire with Colne coming out on top 3-2.

They then took on a Merseyside PC knowing victory would give them the title and they did so in fine style racing to 5-0 win.

First team manager Sharon de Maine was delighted with the efforts of both teams and said the victory was down to hard work and commitment.

"The team only lost two games in the whole tournament, what a great achievement," she said. "Colne 2s played really well as well, their group was very tight because they only lost four game but still missed out on the play-offs

"It was a big competition and can be quite overwhelming for players playing for the first time but they did great.

"The success just goes to show how valuable all our club spirit and team work, mental preparation, hard work on court week after week, and commitment to training sessions pays off."

Chris Kay won player of the day and took home a brand new £60 Babolat racket.

De Maine added: "Well done to Chris, that’s what fair play and court manners will bring you. I was even awarded a manager's trophy for managing the winning team.

"All the players were stars. I would like to thank coach Bryan Colne 2 manager and Luke Ashworth for assisting in a hard training session the night before, to all parents for their support and Mrs Tsang for being our club photographer."
