SPORTY kids from East Lancashire have won the right to represent their boroughs at the 2015 SPAR Lancashire School Games at Blackpool’s Stanley Park.

The Lancashire School Games is the biggest schools tournament in the county and aims to give every child the opportunity to participate in competitive sport and girls from Nelson’s Holy Saviour Primary School will be at the seaside shooting for glory on Tuesday, June 30.

Holy Saviour sealed their place after landing the honours at the Pendle Girls Football Tournament, and Neil Stewart, Pendle School Games organiser said: “Girls’ football is one of the most popular and toughest of competitions at the Spar Games.”

He added: “The standard of competition in the Pendle tournament was exceptionally high, and I’m sure Holy Saviour will represent Nelson with great pride.”

Pendle will be represented too and there’s no danger of pupils from Barnoldswick CE Primary School and Park High School getting lost on the way to Blackpool after they took victory in orienteering to seal their place at the games.

Both schools navigated the competition against 50 other pupils, with eight teams competing in the main orienteering event.

Young sporting stars from two Burnley schools – Burnley High School and St Josephs Park Hill School – are also through to the county finals, this year staged for the ninth time.

They competed against 28 teams from Burnley before booking their day excursion to the coast.

The High-Five Netball competition proved a huge success, with 248 pupils taking part.

In a thrilling final, St Joe’s edged past Wellfield and Methodist and Anglican School, to make home advantage count.

This year’s Burnley girls’ cricket qualifiers was held at Burnley Cricket Club which boasts a thriving girls’ cricket section.

Helen Tyson, Burnley School games organiser, said: “I want to congratulate the 30 pupils who took part in the event from Burnley High School, Blessed Trinity College and Sir John Thursby Community College.

“The standard of competition and sportsmanship was exceptionally high so they should all be congratulated.

“Also, well done to Burnley High School, who now go on to represent the district at the county finals.”

She added: “It has been a really busy and exciting few days for school sports in Burnley, with those much-coveted places at the Lancashire Games up for grabs.

“I wish the schools the very best of luck at the county finals – I hope they bring home gold for Burnley.”

Meanwhile, several other Burnley schools will also be on the bus to Blackpool later this month.

Wins in mini tennis, girls’ football and athletics saw Blessed Trinity College, St Mary Magdalene’s Primary School and Wellfield Methodist and Anglican School qualify for the Spar Games where over 2,000 children will compete in gymnastics, handball, football, netball, rounders, athletics, tennis and tag rugby.

Indeed, Blessed Trinity could celebrate a double after sealing first place in tee-ball and athletics, while St Mary Magdalene’s snatched first place in mini tennis and Wellfield Methodist took home gold in girls’ football.

Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley pupils will be flying the flag at Stanley Park also after victory in rounders, athletics and girls’ football to seal six of the districts’ places at Stanley Park.

St Christophers’s CE High School, Accrington Academy and St Mary’s Roman Catholic High School will represent Hyndburn.

Meanwhile, Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, St Augustine’s High School and Waddington and West Bradford Primary School will battle it out at the county finals for the Ribble Valley.

Jane Johnson, the school games organiser for Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley said: “It is a fantastic achievement by all the schools and I know they are all very excited about the prospect of taking part in the games.”
