TOWNELEY Cup holders Burnley Westend scored ten times as they began the defence of their crown in brilliant style against shell-shocked General Williams.

Westend were in unstoppable form and the visitors were never in the hunt once the champions stepped on the gas to deliver a 10-1 thrashing.

The tie of the round saw George IV and Railway Hotel share fourteen goals, with George IV emerging 9-5 winners to join Westend in the hat for the second round draw.

Free-scoring AFC Bacup also hit six, overwhelming AFC Burnley 6-3.

AFC Booth were also victors, brushing aside Hare and Hounds 2-0.

Prairie Athletic enjoyed an away-day, with their strike force overwhelming Craven Heifer’s defence, scoring six goals without reply.

There was singing at the Longside after a hard fought 2-1 win at AFC Weir saw them safely through, while Railway Club are building up a powerful head of steam going into the next round.

Railway were made to work hard for their 1-0 victory at Boars Head, though.

Ultra Finishing lived up to their name, crushing Glendale 5-1.

“What a fantastic way to start the Towneley Cup, seeing so many goals going in,” said Burnley Miners Burnley and District Sunday League chairman John Pilling.

“I can’t remember the last time we’ve had over fifty goals in an opening round, so it was a great day for the competition.”

Meanwhile, there is a top versus bottom clash this weekend when the Premier League resumes with leaders Prairie Athletic taking on bottom club Ultra Finishing.

Premier Division: Railway Club v George IV; Ultra Finishing v Prairie Athletic.

Division One: Boars Head v Railway Hotel; Craven Heifer v General Williams; Hare and Hounds v Britannia.

Division Two: Acorn FC v The Princess Royal; Gannow v AFC Burnley; Longside v Glendale.

The Burnley Miners Sunday League Christmas fixture break runs from December 14 until January 11, 2015.

Meanwhile, there was plenty of action in the Pendle Charity League Cup, and with several games in the top flight and in Division One, it proved to be another entertaining weekend of amateur competition.

Colne Town and Pendle Blues Athletic locked horns in an all Premier League tie, and it was Colne who eventually emerged victorious by four goals to one after the game was forced into extra time.

Northern Lights’ trophy ambitions were dimmed for another season, though, but not before they had given Paak A a real fright.

It was nip and tuck all the way, before PAAK claimed a place in the next round thanks to a 3-2 win.

Sacred Heart, who are top of the Premier League, predictably proved too strong for Financial Affairs as the leaders cashed in again, this time 4-1.

In the Premier Division, bottom club Pendle Blues continue to struggle and a 4-0 home defeat to SKK Blacko did little to lift morale with just one win in ten league games.

There was a thriller as Trawden Venue and Fence, placed third and fourth respectively, shared eight goals in a high-scoring 4-4 draw.

The goals were flowing in Division One too, with three games producing 18 goals.

The biggest shock was North Valley Rangers’ 5-1 win at leaders Pendle FC.

Boca Clarets cruised to an easy 5-2 victory over AFC Veterans.

Second placed Barnoldswick Barons also suffered a home reverse, 4-1 at the hands of Queens Dynamoes.
