Blackburn 21 Wigan 5

After a close game in the cup at Wigan last week, Blackburn knew they would face another tough test and they were not wrong.

Wigan competed hard all match and looked more threatening than last Saturday but Blackburn defended well and stuck to their task which eventually saw them home.

Much of the early play was in the Wigan half without Burn threatening their opponents try line but a Sam Morgan penalty put them 3-0 up.

Five minutes into the second half Morgan slotted over another penalty to make it 6-0.

However Wigan then had their best spell and were rewarded with a try on 56 minutes.

Burn hit back on 60 minutes with a try of their own, the ball had shot out the back of the scrum on half way, Sean Hall did well to gather the ball and set off on an elusive run that took play up to the away sides 22, he passed wide, but this went to ground.

Adam Todd gathered it out wide and he drove on, Ali Reay then drove on further he managed to flip the ball back inside to Alex Evans who crashed over in the corner.

Morgan missed the conversion.

Wigan then had anotehr sustained period of pressure but were to live to regret not scoring points while on top.

Morgan then kicked a penalty from 35 metres to stetch Blackburn’s lead to 14-5 which just gave them some breathing space.

This seemed to boost Burn’s confidence and they scored their second try soon after. Burn had been lucky to retain possession within Wigan’s 22, but they then spun the ball wide, Jake Maher made a nice break inside, he went to pass, but he was tackled with the Wigan player knocking the ball to the ground, Wigan should really have tidied this up, but Dom Hogan managed to get a toe in to nudge the ball over the line, he managed to gather the ball and fell to score.

Morgan added the extras points taking the score to 21-5 and this is how the score ended.

Burn will be pleased they got their league season off to a winning start, however there is still plenty to work on.

Next week Blackburn are at home again, this time they welcome Aldwinians who this week had an impressive win over Aspatria.
