Classy Katie is one Ell of a swimmer!

KATIE Rilett-Young has added to her growing medal collection after another starring role in the pool at the National Open Disability Championships.

The Burnley Bobcats swimmer won gold, silver and bronze medals at the Ponds Forge in Sheffield and went head-to-head with stars if the London Paralymics – including double gold medal winner Ellie Simmonds.

The 14-year-old underlined her potential in the 100m freestyle where she was only beaten by three Paralympians, clocking her best ever time over the distance.

The Shuttleworth College pupil was fourth behind Simmonds, Natalie Jones and Liz Johnston.

Katie, who trains with the Bobcats Squad seven times a week, recorded personal best times in all the events she competed.

She gained a gold medal in the 50m freestyle, silver in the 100m breaststroke and bronze medals in the 400m freestyle and 100 IM events.

Katie was also chosen to swim as part of the North West 4x100m freestyle team and helped them into bronze medal position.

The times achieved also qualified her for the Home Nations/Regional Talent Programme.

Head Coach, Michael Robinson, said: “It was an excellent performance. “All the hard training and commitment is certainly paying off”

Katie is now back in training and focused on her next competition, The Welsh Open Long Course Championships in Swansea later this month where her competitors will be from some of the top disability swimmers in the country and abroad and will also include Paralympians from London 2012.

In August 2013, Katie aims to attend the World Dwarf Games, which are being held in Michigan, USA.
