TONY Mowbray believes goalkeeper David Raya is ‘standing up well’ and is pleased with the Spaniard’s reaction to his mistake in the Doncaster Rovers defeat.

Raya was at fault for the third goal in Rovers’ 3-1 home defeat to Doncaster last month, but has kept three clean sheets in the following four league outings.

He made several important saves in Rovers’ win at Scunthorpe United on Tuesday, and will be aiming for a third shut-out in a row when AFC Wimbledon arrive at Ewood Park this afternoon.

The 22-year-old has been handed the number one shirt by Mowbray, starting all six league games so far, and the Rovers boss is pleased with Raya’s contribution.

“I think he is a sharp, fast-twitch goalkeeper. He’s not a huge goalkeeper, but he’s alert and sharp,” Mowbray said of his stopper.

“Sometimes the saves he makes look easier than they are because he’s quick at getting across his goal.

“The free-kick from (Josh) Morris that was going in the top corner, it wasn’t a fancy dive, he moved his feet fast and tipped it over pretty comfortably.

“Other goalies might have flung themselves across the goal and not got there.

“He’s an agile, fast goalkeeper and that’s what I like.

“His mistake against Doncaster shows that he has character to bounce back from that which is a massive quality for any goalkeeper.

“He’s standing up well.”

Rovers kept five clean sheets in Mowbray’s 15 league games in charge last season and have followed that up with three in six League One fixtures this term.

He added: “I’m quick to say it’s not just about the goalkeeper and the back four, it’s about the team.

“You can see how hard the front two are working, tripping over their tongues, and they have hardly had a kick but are working hard to put pressure on their backline to stop them playing forward.

“It’s a team effort, everyone is working hard.

“Ultimately, we went there (to Glanford Park) on a stereotypical League One night, it was windy, cold and raining, and in total respect to Scunthorpe who I think are a terrific football club, this is not a big arena but we showed the right attitude to get the right result.”

But despite four wins in a row, and three clean sheets, Raya himself isn’t getting carried away by the recent run.

He said: “We have to go game-by-game, the next one is at home, we need to try to get the three points and then go again.

“It is really important to keep our heads and don’t get carried away. We need to do our thing and hope we can get the win.

“We have some very good players up front and we create a lot of chances. If we keep playing like this then the goals will come and we’ll be all right.”
