TONY Mowbray is still looking to be active in the transfer market before the window closes on Thursday.

The Rovers boss is hoping to add competition throughout this squad, but is particularly keen to strengthen in defence, with Paul Caddis the only defensive addition to date this summer.

Rovers are understood to be interested in Motherwell defender Ben Heneghan, although the Scottish Premiership club aren’t keen to lose the 23-year-old, who has also been linked with Birmingham City as well as a host of other Championship clubs.

The Fir Park club are expected to reject Rovers’ initial bid, despite the player going in to the final year of his contract.

Mowbray wouldn’t comment on the links with Heneghan, but did rule out an Ewood Park return for Paul Gallagher.

“I’m hoping to be busy in the next few days,” Mowbray said.

“Hopefully we can get some business done and after Thursday night that’s what we’ve got to go in to the campaign with until January.

“We are talking to a few clubs and I think it’s best I leave it at that.

“We’re trying really hard to add to the group, I have spoken about how short of numbers we are, if we can find one that will impact on the starting XI that would be great.

“If we’re just trying to beef up the squad, knowing that we will pick up injuries and suspensions along the way then we’re looking to make that happen as well.

“Mainly it’s to create competition for all positions on the pitch so the back players don’t feel as though as they are automatic choices, or the midfielders and strikers the same.

“We’re just looking to add competition in all areas.”

On the rumours linking Rovers with a move for Paul Gallagher, Mowbray said: “It's the first I've heard of it.”

Mowbray admits there still could be a departure from Ewood Park before 11pm on Thursday, but says 'it won't be a concern' were that not to be the case.

On whether Danny Graham will be a Rovers player come Friday, he said: “I hope so.

“What I would say, he hasn't played the last few games but his record for scoring goals at the club is really good and as long as he's up for the challenge of competing with Samuel, Antonsson and potentially Nuttall, all of those players who play in and around the attacking areas of the pitch then we are happy to have him here and hopefully he can play his part and help us be successful.”
