TONY Mowbray is hopeful of adding a new midfielder to his ranks ahead of Saturday’s first home game of the season against Doncaster Rovers.

Mowbray is still looking to add more competition in the middle of the park despite the summer arrivals of Richie Smallwood and Peter Whittingham.

Smallwood, and Corry Evans, both scored, and impressed, as Rovers progressed in the Carabao Cup courtesy of a 3-1 win at the Ricoh Arena against Coventry City.

Strengthening in the middle of the park was a key priority of Mowbray following the departures of Jason Lowe, Hope Akpan and Danny Guthrie.  Whittingham and Smallwood were his first two signings of the summer, but the Rovers boss is still looking for another to add to his squad.

Mowbray is mindful of a lack of numbers at his disposal, with injuries already starting to hit despite the new season being less than a week old.

And in a bid not to leave himself short in a key area of the field, Mowbray is confident that a deal is there to be done.

“Hopefully we will bring in another midfielder to add competition to Smallwood, Whittingham and Evans,” Mowbray said.

On when the deal could be done, he added: “Hopefully in the next day or so.”
