BLACKBURN Rovers will continue to scour the free agent market for the ‘right player’ according to boss Owen Coyle.

Out of contract pair Paul Caddis and Lucas Mugni spent time training with Rovers last week and Ewood Director of Football Operations Paul Senior has maintained dialogue with both players’ representatives.

Rovers are still awaiting a work permit decision over a potential move for Celtic defender Efe Ambrose having added Sheffield Wednesday forward Lucas Joao and Swansea striker Marvin Emnes on loan in the January transfer window.

Coyle had hoped to further strengthen his ranks before the window closed and said deals for right-back Caddis and attacking midfielder Mugni aren’t dead in the water, with the Rovers boss insisting he will continue to keep an eye out for potential incomings.

“If it was the right player who we think could help us then of course we would love to bring them in,” said Coyle who watched his side drop to 23rd in the table last night as Rovers were beaten 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday.

“I think that would give everyone at the club a boost, but when all is said and done, they need to be the right quality to come in and play not just be a body coming in for a body’s sake.

“When we look at it they need to be able to come in and help us and that’s the way it’s got to be.”

Caddis, 28, was released by Birmingham last month and spent time training at Brockhall last week as Rovers assessed his fitness.

Twenty-five-year-old Mugni, who left Flamengo in January, also trained with Rovers, but reports in Spain suggest the attacking midfielder is now on trial with Spanish second division side Mallorca.

Rovers had hoped to involve both in a behind closed doors game last week to take a closer look at the pair.

But Coyle says conversations will continue with the players.

He added: “Paul Caddis is someone who knows and has played at the level, but he does, I imagine, have other options out there.

“So that dialogue continue and we’ll go from there.

“It was a difficult week because of the preparation for the game that we weren’t able to get the behind closed doors game that we would have liked.

“That would have allowed us to have seen the players in a match set-up instead of the bits in training.

“Paul (Senior) has still been chatting away to both of the players’ representatives and we will see where we get with that.”
