FOUR Blackburn Rovers legends have followed in the footsteps of Alan Shearer and had a bus named in their honour.

Jack Walker, Simon Garner, Bryan Douglas and Tugay were chosen by fans to have their names on the front of four buses.

Transdev-owned bus operator Lancashire United, based in Whitebirk Road, Blackburn, asked fans to pick which Rovers players and officials should appear on its buses after the unveiling of the Alan Shearer bus in December.

The buses will operate on the number ‘1’ service which passes Ewood Park on its way between Blackburn and Darwen.

Number 1875 in the fleet, the same year Rovers were formed, will be the bus named after the late Blackburn-born steel magnate come owner, Walker, who bought the club and delivered the Premiership title.

Rovers and England legend Douglas, 81, played for the club between 1952 and 1969 and has a stand named after him at Ewood Park.

He started out working on the buses as an apprentice when he was 15, straight from leaving school.

Douglas said: “It is very flattering of course to have a bus named after me.

“It’s great to see fans still think about me and it’s wonderful to have my name on the bus.

“I was an apprentice for 18 months and I signed for Rovers during my time on the buses.

“I used to have an afternoon off in the week to go and play for them and I had to ask my manager to get the time off each week.

“It would have been nice for some of the lads I worked with on the buses to have seen this as they would have found it humourous.”

Rovers’ all-time top-scorer, Garner, 56, who scored 168 league goals for the club, said: “It is a big honour for me, at first I thought it was a wind up but I was delighted when it was true.

“It makes me feel good that people still remember me and it was great to hear people still thought of me in a good way.

“It brings a lot of memories flooding back.”

Other names fans could vote for were David Speedie, Ronnie Clayton, Kenny Dalglish, Jordan Rhodes and Bob Crompton.

Alex Hornby, chief executive of Lancashire United, said: “The feedback from passengers and football fans alike has shown what an appetite there was for the club’s legends to be recognised in such a way.”
