THE Football League has confirmed that Blackburn Rovers will have the chance to see their Financial Fair Play embargo removed during the remainder of the current transfer window – but it would mean more players sales.

Rovers and Nottingham Forest have been under an embargo since January after failing FFP regulations.

But as part of a statement on its website, issued this evening, the League said: “Blackburn Rovers and Nottingham Forest continue to be subject to FFP embargoes relating to their returns for 2013/14 season.

“Both clubs will have the opportunity to remove their existing embargo during the remainder of the current transfer window by using any funds raised from player sales to cover previous losses.”

After last season’s leading goalscorer Rudy Gestede was sold to Aston Villa for £6m last month Rovers managing director Derek Shaw said the club was getting ‘nearer and nearer’ to having its embargo lifted.

Embargoed Championship clubs are prevented from paying fees for permanent and loan signings.

And any new recruit cannot be paid more than around £10,000 per week.

Embargoed Championship clubs are also restricted to a squad of 24 established players.

Established players are those aged over 21 who have made at least five first-team starts for their current club.

New signings, regardless of age or experience, are automatically regarded as established.
