ROVERS’ 14-match unbeaten run in the Championship came to an end in heartbreaking fashion at a fervent Carrow Road last night as Bradley Johnson and Lewis Grabban condemned them to a first league defeat since March 12.

After Johnson struck in the 87th minute salt was rubbed into the wounds in injury time when Grabban, who was the match-winner for his former club Bournemouth the last time Gary Bowyer’s side lost in the Championship, netted his second of a dramatic evening.

Rovers had threatened to blow Norwich away in the first 10 minutes after Tom Cairney broke the deadlock in sensational style after just 41 seconds.

But Neil Adams’ team, who have come down from the Premier League, hit back impressively and were level at half-time after referee Graham Scott gifted them a penalty which Grabban tucked away on the rebound after man-of-the-match Paul Robinson had saved his initial spot-kick.

The Canaries, who had failed to win any of the previous 10 meetings between the sides, were ultimately worthy winners.

But Rovers, after a spirited rearguard action, will feel they did enough to merit a point.

Bowyer made one change from the team which started the Rudy Gestede-inspired 2-1 triumph at Blackpool on Saturday as Lee Williamson was recalled at the expense of Josh King.

That meant Cairney was switched from the centre to the right of midfield.

But former Rovers left back Martin Olsson was not the man marking Cairney after he was hit with a three-match ban by the FA for making physical contact with the referee prior to his sending off in Norwich’s 1-0 opening day defeat at Wolves.

With Olsson’s suspended, and denied the chance to go head to head with his twin brother Martin Olsson, the Canaries were unchanged from the team which started their 3-0 home win over Watford on Saturday.

But their hopes of keeping another clean sheet were shattered within the first minute as Cairney scored what will be one of the goals of the season.

If you think the talented midfielder’s strike in the opening day 1-1 draw at home to Cardiff City was good, well this was better.

A deep free kick from Markus Olsson was headed down by Gestede into the path of Cairney who did superbly to adjust his body and send a stunning 22-yard half-volley into the top corner.

And shell-shocked Norwich could have no complaints had they fallen further behind soon after.

After Jordan Rhodes had a strong penalty appeal turned down, Alex Baptiste headed over from the corner that followed.

Then it was the turn of Gestede, who was simply unplayable in the opening stages, to go close as he flicked a Craig Conway free kick inches the post, before Cairney tested John Ruddy from 25 yards with another well struck, but this time low, shot.

Crucially, however, Rovers were unable to get the second goal their blistering start deserved.

And, having survived the onslaught, the Canaries fought back with a 15-minute spell of pressure every bit as intense as to which they had just been subject to.

Firstly the onrushing Alexander Tettey rattled a 20-yard drive against the post after Grabban had missed Javier Garrido’s cutback before Robinson pushed a 25-yard curler from Kyle Lafferty around the post.

Former Burnley forward Lafferty went closer still when his header from a Nathan Redmond cross deflected off Grant Hanley and dropped agonisingly wide.

But fortune deserted Rovers in the 22nd minute when referee Scott inexplicably adjudged Jason Lowe to have handled Wes Hoolahan’s cross into the box despite the right back having his hand down by his side.

Justice appeared to have been done when Robinson saved Grabban’s penalty.

However the ball broke kindly for the £3m striker and he side-footed home.

Robinson then saved from Redmond from distance as the Canaries, roared on by a passionate home crowd, seemed set to turn the contest on its head.

But, bar a fantastic tackle by immense Rovers captain Hanley on Grabban when he was bearing down on goal, they did not threaten again before the break.

Grabban, at the focal point of Norwich’s fluid front four, created the first chance of the second half in the 58th minute when he produced a sharp turn in the area before poking an effort that would have sneaked it at the near post had Robinson not reacted smartly to palm it away.

Robinson was beaten in the 67th minute, though.

But fortunately half-time substitute Ryan Bennett’s powerful header from Tettey’s wonderfully whipped cross from the right hit the bar and went over.

Norwich rattled the woodwork again six minutes later yet that only tells half the story.

Redmond’s cross from the left was flicked on to Grabban who, from eight yards out, seemed certain to score.

But Robinson produced a truly breathtaking save to push his header on to the bar.

Rovers sent on King for Rhodes and the sub did head an opportunity straight at Ruddy.

But it was the Canaries who were doing all the pressing and eventually they found a breakthrough three minutes from the end of normal time when Johnson placed the ball beautifully over Robinson from 18 yards.

Ruddy then denied Markus Olsson a dramatic equaliser before Grabban rounded off the scoring after Rovers were caught upfield.

Looking at the other results so far it shows how tough this league is going to be this season.

Quite right we have too. You and I both know how tuff the Premiership and Championship are.

Take the positives from the game and focus on the next game. Even against Chelsea there were a lot of positives to take and to learn from.

There are many tuff games to come for both our teams with up's and downs but it's where you finish that counts.

Welsh Rover says...

Losing away from home to one of the pre-season promotion favourites isn't entirely unexpected, nor is it a cause for embarrassment. However, the nature of the defeat does leave a sour taste in the mouth. I like Bowyer but when is he going to learn that sitting back trying to defend a one goal lead/ a draw isn't going to work against the better sides in the division. Under the cosh from the 10th minute onwards and we play most of the last 25 minutes with one striker. Trying to sneak a win against the likes of Norwich, Cardiff and Derby isn't the right game plan, we need to be taking the game to them for the full 90+ minutes. That means playing your strongest possible team in their best positions. Granted, Cairney scored another great goal but he's nowhere near as effective on the right side of midfield as he is in the centre. King should've started instead of Williamson as we would've caused them far more problems with his pace.

Still, it's only 3 games in and we've already played two of the relegated sides. Hopefully we'll bounce back against Bournemouth this weekend, although judging by tonight's performance, we definitely need Kilgallon back fit to help shore up the defence.

Dunno why I bother reading the comments... its just really really poor banter..
Doesn't seem like either sets of fans really give a shiz about football :p
At the end of the day Burnley fans are bitter because Rovers have actually won stuff - and Rovers fans are jelly that Burnley are currently a premiership team.. and we dont have the unbeaten record tp hold over there heads.

Back to the game - poor decision for the Norwich equaliser; 2nd goal sounded like a good finish & 3rd goal came when robbo went up for the corner.
No service for rhodes or Gestede = a lose. People blasting robbo again - he kept us in the game up to the 87th min!! Keepers are only as good as thw defence indront of them!

You can't win em all! Nows the time to go on another 13 game unbeaten streak

Elysiumfire ,

All those comments on the Clarets page just goes to show how envious, jealous and infatuated they are from watching, listening , reading and commenting on the Claret & Blue. In a roundabout way there just masking the love , not for there so called Rovers but for Burnley FC a Premiership Club.

I was thinking your comment was a bit harsh but that was for less than a blink of an eye. Keep up the good work.

By the way do you know If Norwich had 9 players in there starting 11 that played in the World Cup? Did that starting 11 cost £196 million?

Just wondering if you know chap.

No they didn't have. 9 players from the World Cup, but they have more Premiership players than Burnley have and will probably be taking your place in a few months time.

Drop Robinson , who would you replace him with !!!!

Robinson is still a quality keeper, if Kean or Eastwood had been playing we would have zero points now.

As for Mr Bowyer, he has deserved the chance to give it a real go this season so let him get on with the job and support the team instead of being so negative. This was always going to be a tough game and with the rub of the green we could easily have come away with at least a draw.

exactly, you were at home, Rovers were at Norwich,
do you understand the question now?
answering your question Burnley should have spent some of the 100 million they received when they got promoted, I watched the match last night and you need a new goalkeeper, defender and winger, Trippier was by far your best player and you will find it hard to keep hold of him.
not a bad performance to say you had Chelsea but in the premiership the teams don't get any easier...

Ditto, and before any Claret fans start screaming "where have you been" I was on here eating humble pie as soon as the report came up.

Look about 11 posts down.

Would have been happy with a point but by all accounts the best team won on the night.

Admit it, you are, and never will be good enough, living in our shadow for years to come.

No you have the Mr Dull 'Grey as F**k' Bowyer. Wonder where Turf Moor T*t, AP4B, Ted Maul, Super Claret are tonight, very conspicuous by their absence don't you think. All is very quiet in Deadwood tonight.

How embarrassing.

This result puts us soundly in our place after our goading of the Burnley supporters, and given the over enthusiastic comments from some of our more jealous culprits I'm sorry to say its no more than we deserve. I've said it time and time again, our defence simply isn't up to it and yet Bowyer does nothing even though the transfer window is still open. What a moron.

Blackburn Rovers 0 - 1 Scunthorpe
Norwich 3 - 1 Blackburn Rovers

Play-off's? Don't be silly. We are a disgrace.

Venky's ambitious with Blackburn? Hell Modan try a bit more meditation. Surely even you must br aware that they will pull the plug soon. A defeat on Saturday could do it. This from s businss associate in Pune this week

It' s mis-type you nit. I've been in business many years and dealt with Indian business men. They are good. Venky's, goodness me, what happened? But it won't go on much longer now. Same old Gary same old tactics. No good everybody blaming the defence all the time when we sit back and allow teams to come at us for big chunks of the game. This team is lacking so much pace it is unreal. We are so pedestrian with slow passing that we become too predictable making it easy for teams to snuff out our attacking play and push us back with ease. If GB doesn't change tact soon the wheels will start to come off fairly quickly I am afraid.

It's very quiet over at deadwood all of a sudden...........
No but Lafferty played for 74 minutes, shame he didn't score, but then that's why we sold him to Rangers because he was sh**e.

Venky's ambitious with Blackburn? Hell Modan try a bit more meditation. Surely even you must br aware that they will pull the plug soon. A defeat on Saturday could do it. This from s businss associate in Pune this week
How can you be in business, you cannot spell even with spell check.
It' s mis-type you nit. I've been in business many years and dealt with Indian business men. They are good. Venky's, goodness me, what happened? But it won't go on much longer now. Why do you think they sacked all the previous managers? Because they are desperate to be in thr EPL, like Burnley are. If you do not win on Saturday - could be they pull out. Some of you, judging by your postings will be happy - but what happens then? Betting shop tomorrow for me.
Best not go into that betting shop tomorrow Tall, you might get a glimpse on Bonleh's odds for going down !! Can't fool these bookies.
Well at least they will be less than yours for promotion you prat, you cant even beat beat a reject premiership side and you scoff at us for losing to Chelsea. I think they call that Karma or is it Korma, Chicken Korma, LMFAO.
Those odds were made by the bookies BEFORE you played Chelsea - now who's the prat !!
Take a look now and you will see a different set of odds, now whose the prat, you prat.
Yep - still the only prem. club to be odds on for relegation.
Like I said, can't fool those bookies lol.
And the odds for Bas**rds promotion campaign is ?, I think you will find the odds are greater than our relegation odds, you cant fool those bookies can you now.
Oh, but I can - always put my money on the odds-on favourites.
Can't see your guys letting me down.
Well unfortunately for you there is more chance of FFP kicking in and you getting a points deduction and relegation than there is of us coming back down. Now put a bet on that one as you will get good odds and you might be the richest pauper in Deadwood.
Everyone getting a bit carried away here - the Championship is a competitive league so we cannot expect not to lose this season and these results have to be expected.
My own view is at best we may have a shot at getting into the play offs - cannot see anything more, I don't think we're anywhere near strong enough for the top 2
Will be more than happy to be proved wrong.
Lets see where we are after 10 games then we'll have a better idea of how the season starts to pan out.

The worst thing to happen was scoring so early. The Rovers mindset is, if in front hang on! Unfortunately they are not capable of doing that. Only Howard Kendall had that tactic down to a fine art. And GB is not in the same league as Howard.
It is early days with plenty of time to sort things out. Forget about Burnley and their inane comments, we will laugh at them, they will laugh at us. It doesn't change anything. What matters is GB changing his tactics and getting Rhodes back scoring. Saturdays match now takes on greater significance, we must start a new unbeaten run.

look we lost a game - nobody died. it is clear we have been defensively woeful since allardyce left and we seem to be incapable of playing for 90 minutes. under kean we seemed to run out of juice by 70mins, under bowyer 80mins - clearly this is a problem - under hughes we used to batter teams in the last 15 mins.

listening to radio lancs last night sutton said we had 19 outfield players and therefore are completely reliant on a small band of players not getting banned or seriously injured. so our squad it not much bigger than blackpool's

dont think we will be able to bring any more in on permanent deals - so we will be reliant on loan signings over the next two weeks

personally never been overly impressed with hanley - but he is all we have got and no real fan of williamson as he seems to put us in compromising positions too often.

still reasonably optimistic for the season - but this defence issue needs sorting and needs sorting now.

yes, robinson does make some blunders - but he is not to blame for the weaknesses of the defenders.

We lost to Chelsea, big deal, so will most teams in the prem this season. You lot lost to----who? Oh yes, Norwich! By the same score! Wind your necks in won't you, you are a championship club sitting in mid-table where you were most of last season. The infestation of the Burnley forum yesterday by your bitterly jealous fans was an embarrassment to your club.

Agreed we need a couple more defenders in and with Utd signing Rojo Id expect Keane to be back over by the weekend if not next week. Those calling for Bowyer to go need to get real. The job he has done with us in the time he has done it is exceptional. We have just lost our first league game in 14 matches spanning back to March. We have played two of the relegated sides and gained a point from both of those games. Lets base a judgement after 10 or so games but I still think he is the right man to take us forward

Well the pattern is there already Cardiff and Notts Forest and Charlton seem to be the form teams at the moment.I am sure if GB had got two decent defenders in early in on we would have drawn that game. The fact is although we are very unlucky with referees and penalties the big home crowd at Norwich do influence the referee.I also noted the opta stats which confirmed to everyone that Norwich were much the better team than us in that game.We need to look at both our midfield and defence as we let in too many late goals and with strikers like Rhodes and Gestade we need to feed them and our wide men dont do it often enough. On a positive we look much better than we did at this time last year and look where we ended up.

Aboutr two thirds of the posts on that story were from your lot who couldn't wait to hand out the unjustified stick after a Burnley performance that was a long way from embarrassing.
We lost to Chelsea, big deal, so will most teams in the prem this season. You lot lost to----who? Oh yes, Norwich! By the same score! Wind your necks in won't you, you are a championship club sitting in mid-table where you were most of last season. If we lose our next game or the one after, or the one after that, we are still playing in the prem, which is more than your lot will be doing for a long time to come. The infestation of the Burnley forum yesterday by your bitterly jealous fans was an embarrassment to your club.
I won't be posting any more and won't respond to any replies as I just had to point out what was, I suppose, the glaringly obvious.
You may want to look at the number of comments from Burnley fans above you moron. The only reason a lot of Rovers fans don't come on here anymore is because of the idiotic, childish and boring comments from Burnley fans for the last 12 months plus. I have no inclination to go on the Burnley pages as I could not care less if they win, lose or draw. I wish the Burnley fans would do the same and stay on their own pages.

Burnley fans are bitter? They're happier than they've been since Mach 9th. Don't be a prat.
You might be happy now - but the truth is that unless you get brought out by someone willing to spend multi millions; your club will never be as successful as Rovers. IMO, there will never be another "small" club to win the premiership - because the big teams (man city, man utd, chelsea, arsenal, Liverpool) have money to burn.. for the rest its about the "winnable" cups.. the fa cup and the carling cup and premier leafue safety.

I dunno about other rovers fan, but im quite happy supporting the forgot champions.
Im fairly realistic about how we are not a premiership team anymore and im not overly botherd.. the championship is a competitive league, you get more games and its not an obvious league. What it does lack is decent officials and better coverage.

Morning,

As has already been stated we lost a game and lost it to arguably one of the best teams in the division, I think most Rovers fans would have been happy to come away with a draw and we almost did do, but didnt, so we dust ourselves down and prepare for the next match against bournemouth.

For me last night just further highlights our need to strenghen, especially at at the back.
Bowyer and his backroom staff are the professionals and will know which positions need strenghing, the problem will be getting the right bodies through the door I expect.

On another note.. does anyone know if Rhodes is carrying a knock?

I don't make a habit of interacting with the trolls on this forum - both Burnley and Rovers - but I do feel the need to question one particular Burnley fan's post, that of houseclaret. Whilst you are clearly aware that there are morons from both fan bases whose only contribution to this world is endlessly ripping the urine out of each other, (regardless of facts, figures or common sense), surely you must be aware that there are also decent fans who steer clear of all that childish nonsense?

I find it confusing, therefore, that you decide to post such a sanctimonious comment whilst making equally ridiculous statements about our club as the trolls who have the nerve to call themselves football fans. I've never posted on a Burnley article but I don't consider myself to be morally superior to any other poster on here. However, I do take some pride in not engaging in the banal post-match rituals of certain individuals. You seemed like a decent contributor before so it's a shame you got sucked into the mud slinging.

Two sensible and on the money posts from Hass and DB. Move on the rest of you, Bournemouth are up next but they wont be any easier for us than Cardiff, Blackpool or Norwich, as they are playing some good attacking football under Eddie Howe. No easy games in this league this season.

As much as I do not want to slate GB as I think he has done a very good job with regards the shipping out of players and bringing good quality players in, I am afraid his tactics once again gives us no chance of winning. Surely you play your strongest team. I would rather get beat trying to win a game than trying to defend from the start. I keep saying it but if we are to play Williamson we have no chance. He is desperately slow, he can't tackle and he offers nothing going forward. Why play our best player out wide??? I just can't understand the logic. Probably one of the best if not the best central midfield player in the league and we play him out wide. As long as GB keeps setting up defensively we won't go up. I said it last season and I was hoping GB would have learnt his lessons but sadly it appears not. We must set up to attack the teams in the championship.

Probably one of the best if not the best central midfield player in the league and we play him out wide. As long as GB keeps setting up defensively we won't go up. I said it last season and I was hoping GB would have learnt his lessons but sadly it appears not. We must set up to attack the teams in the championship. forever blue and white

Two sensible and on the money posts from Hass and DB. Move on the rest of you, Bournemouth are up next but they wont be any easier for us than Cardiff, Blackpool or Norwich, as they are playing some good attacking football under Eddie Howe. No easy games in this league this season.
A lot was made of our first 8 fixtures, and whilst it's good to get the toughest teams out of the way early, you're on the money with there being no easy games. However, if we're going to make the play-offs then lessons need to be learned, and quickly. Bowyer knows we're weak in defence yet he invites more pressure on them with his team selection. We've got enough attacking flair in our team to be taking it to even the best of teams so hopefully we'll see that come to fruition soon.

I said I wouldn't reply on here today but I feel I owe you an explanation. I wasn't having a go at the many decent Rovers fans who post, even on the Burnley forum, and I agree there are idiots on both sides, I was simply letting off steam because the story yesterday was unbelievably taken over by Rovers fans, most of whom I'd never heard of.
I am actually known as someone who wants to "clean up" the forums so that proper argument and banter can take place. Hi, Frenchie. Nobody is saying other teams are going to lay down for us, but when we have a defence as weak as ours the last thing we need to be doing is inviting more pressure on it by playing two defence-minded midfielders in the centre. If we've got the ball up the other the end then the opposition can't score, obviously. If we want to be serious contenders for promotion we will have to get out of the mentality that the opposition are superior to us. Look at Charlton, on paper they don't have a better team than us but they've started this season with the right attitude, namely that they can beat anyone.

Of course we're not going to win every game, but we'll win a lot fewer if we start most of them with a view to sitting back and hitting the opposition on the counter. You say we can't go and attack away from home irrespective of who we play but I'm pretty certain that's exactly what every team that's been promoted automatically in recent seasons has had to do.

We've got the firepower, it's time to take the division by the scruff of the neck.

Yes we do have good attacking options but you just cannot ignore the other teams abilities Welshie.....we are not Real Madrid or Barca and cant go and attack away from home irrespective of whom we play ---- other teams are not going to lay down for us.
Look at Charlton, on paper they don't have a better team than us but they've started this season with the right attitude, namely that they can beat anyone.

listening to radio lancs last night sutton said we had 19 outfield players and therefore are completely reliant on a small band of players not getting banned or seriously injured. so our squad it not much bigger than blackpool's

dont think we will be able to bring any more in on permanent deals - so we will be reliant on loan signings over the next two weeks

personally never been overly impressed with hanley - but he is all we have got and no real fan of williamson as he seems to put us in compromising positions too often.

still reasonably optimistic for the season - but this defence issue needs sorting and needs sorting now.

I know Robinson cant be totally to blame but he needs to start catching the ball instead of trying to punch it clear all the time

Totally agree B & W.

Why did he change a winning team - a team that had just won away from home?
I would like to see stats showing how many games we have won under GB when he has started with 2 holding midfielders.
