Consistency will be key for Blackburn Rovers this season insists skipper Grant Hanley

FIRED-UP captain Grant Hanley has issued a rallying call to his Blackburn Rovers team-mates ahead of tonight’s big season opener with title favourites Cardiff City (7.45pm).

Hopes are high among supporters that Rovers can end their exile from the top flight and Hanley backs the idea that they now have the players capable of mounting a sustained promotion push.

But the 22-year-old insists the only way Gary Bowyer’s side are going to make it back to the Premier League is if they replicate the consistency they showed at the end of last season.

Before then Rovers, after a massive upheaval of their squad, blew hot and cold. And Scotland star Hanley, who is set to embark on his first full season as skipper, is determined to ensure there will be no repeat of that fluctuating form.

The top centre back said: “The one thing the manager has done since he came in is get a settled squad.

“We’ve got a group of players here now who we think are capable of challenging this season.

“But we need to find that level of consistency that we finished last season in.”

Rovers finished the 2013-14 campaign unbeaten in 12 matches and just two points outside of the play-off places.

That has given supporters real belief that their side can secure a top-six spot in 2014-15. Hanley admits that has to be the aim.

But he is not looking any further ahead than tonight’s hotly anticipated visit of the relegated Cardiff to Ewood Park.

Hanley said: “We can’t get too far ahead of ourselves.

“We’ve just got to keep concentrating week in and week out and take each game as it comes and see where we are at the end of the season.

“The Championship is long and hard, and the games come thick and fast, so you’ve just got to hang on in there and hopefully come the back end of the season you have put yourself in a position where you can push for promotion.”

Winger Ben Marshall and former Cardiff striker Gestede are set to be named in Rovers boss Bowyer’s squad for tonight’s Sky Sports live showdown. But there remains a doubt over summer signing Chris Brown whose knee problems prevented the forward from playing a minute of pre-season.

Marshall, meanwhile, has been linked with a move to league rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

The 23-year-old, who arrived at Rovers in August last year, enjoyed a successful loan spell at Hillsborough earlier in his career and, during another loan, played under current Owls boss Stuart Gray when he was in charge at Northampton Town.

Yesterday Gray, who is looking for a new winger after selling Michail Antonio to Nottingham Forest for £1.5m, said: “Ben’s a good player and I’m always going to be interested in good players.

“But I’ve not made any contact with the Blackburn manager regarding him..”

As much as I like Hanley as a player, his temperament leaves a lot to be desired. I think he could end up costing us critical points again this season unless Bowyer gets him under control. And as I said yesterday, take Hanley out of the picture through injury or, more likely, regular suspension, and what have we got as backup? Its not looking good is it.

When we win those 12 games in a row I'll agree with you, but when we draw half of them I see no reason to get excited. We've got a long way to go to match what the likes of Leicester and Burnley managed last season with incredible runs of 7 or 8 wins on the bounce. I really cant see this team we've got now putting two wins together.

Hanley is one of those that needs to step up to the plate consistency wise, lets his heart rule his head too often. If he matures he has the makings of a top level defender. It is easy to forget that he is still only 22 though,

I would like to see another CB brought in to challenge him before the end of the window, Keane back on loan would be perfect

It would help the cause Grant if you stopped giving away stupid penalties and getting yourself sent off. Look at your own game, get that in order and the rest as they say will follow. (Still think we can get up this year though)

Really?

Most clubs in the champ would kill for the options we've got going forward. In any given game we have the players to create & score goals on a regular basis.

If anything, those clubs doing it showed that any team can do it. There was nothing special about those two squads of players, they just played for each other & worked hard every game while having players up front that can put the ball in the net.

Stay mostly injury free, cut out silly mistakes and anything can happen

The basis of a promotion push is a well organised side with excellent defensive qualities. The fans are again correct we need another centre back as we have not got sufficient cover and every team gets its share of injuries.
I think we will find it difficult again as looking at pre season we had an unbeaten run if that was the league it would be 4 draws 4 pints out of 12 available which is relegation form.

I've no need to convince anyone of anything. I know what I am and I know what you are. I'm more a Blackburn fan than you'll ever be you ignorant shellsuit wearing gutter-chav. Your comments bring shame on the decent Rovers fans who contribute to these pages and highlight your obsession with Burnley FC. Yes they beat us, yes at the moment they are bigger and better than us, and yes they have done things the proper way and earnt their place in the Premier League.

Are we bitter? Yes.
Does it make us cry? Yes
Can we change it? No

So maybe you should follow my lead and have a bit of respect for their achievements because after all we'd all love to be in their position going into a Premier League season, debts wiped out, full house every game, Sky TV money rolling in, financial security, building the club on and off the pitch, increased commercial profile, increased revenue streams, the cream of world football on display week in, week out. I just cant think of anything better.

So on behalf of myself and all of the decent Rovers fans, I congratulate Burnley FC and wish them well in the top flight.

If we want to emulate them we need to rid ourselves of parasitic plastic fans such as yourself who are ruled by jealousy and start to show a bit of class.

Hanley for me will do a job but he desperately needs an experienced CB alongside him to teach him composure and what it takes to be a club captain, someone like Scott Dann would be ideal..... hang on a minute.

Dont get me wrong I hate Burnley but why dont you lot just accept we need to look at them as the example to follow. We can only do things from this point on without throwing money at it just as they have done so very successfully last season. There is no better model of how to run a football club than Burnley FC. I know a lot of you wont agree but its a fact. We are now where the Clarets were 6 or 7 years ago, bumbling along in the second division losing money and selling to survive. So I say lets stop being so jealous of them and one day we might be able to achieve what they have.

You couldn't make it up. What a worthless degenerate you are.

There are some really obnoxious people on this site and your all of them
Sticking up for your limp-wristed boyfriend again I see. How romantic.

You're a c0ck. No sane rovers fan would have a username like that. Are you not the same turd that used to pretend he was a burnley fan?! That was also pathetic.

Why spend a single second of your life replying to him? He's the biggest troll ever, not a football fan either as he doesn't go. He's here to wind you up. Why let him?
Anyway, why should we be thinking of selling Marshall? Just paper talk I think and a non starter.
In todays Telegraph there's the latest photo of Hanley and he looks in better shape than I've ever seen him. Looks like GB has been working them hard.
lets get the ball rolling ...

Thought the same at the stoke Game looked sharp and worked hard. The real concern I had for the two centre halfs is the way they seem to struggle with big rangey players, we saw it with Zigic last season and Crouch a bit first half. Hanley is a big lad but he needs to use his brain as well, it will come with experience though and its easy to forget how young he is.

No So maybe you should follow my lead and have a bit of respect for their achievements because after all we'd all love to be in their position going into a Premier League season, debts wiped out, full house every game, Sky TV money rolling in, financial security, building the club on and off the pitch, increased commercial profile, increased revenue streams, the cream of world football on display week in, week out. Is this going to be yet another day of your sad pathetic life, wasted on the LT website, trying to convince people you're a Rovers fan, instead of the sad pathetic Rovers obsessed Burnley fan that you really are?

You spent ALL day yesterday on here. You'll spend ALL of today on here, and you'll spend ALL tomorrow on here too.

How tragic it must be to be you. No wife, no job, no mates, no life. What a sad pathetic existence you have. But it's all of your own doing. You've brought it all on yourself, sat in your pi*s stained claret and blue onsie, in your Burnley hovel, trawling the internet ALL day EVERY day, searching for articles on BLACKBURN ROVERS. You couldn't make it up. What a worthless degenerate you are.

Yes I agree about Crouch, all arms and legs. Good job there aren't that many Crouch's and Zigic's about but playing against these players is part of the learning curve. Let's hope Hanley has learned from his mistakes last season.

The thing with Hanley is he's got this massive head but only a very tiny brain rattling around in there, a bit like a frozen pea in a balloon. He's not captain material whatsoever, I doubt he could even tie his own bootlaces, so its little wonder he reverts to caveman mode in the box and gives away so many silly penaties. Its like trying to train a baboon in the art of standing his man up. He'll cost us a good 5 or 6 points this season I guarantee it.

I think you've just about exhausted this pretending to be Rovers fan lark Super_Cnut. Time to rethink you're trolling strategy or maybe just give it up as yet another miserable failure?

I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm a Rovers fan, always have been. I had a minor breakdown towards the end of last season when that lot beat us at Ewood, then went up and stopped us from reaching the play-offs but I'm on the mend now.

The only failure which concerns me now is our failure to compete in what will be the most difficult Championship to escape from yet. And given our forthcoming public de-panting by FFP its likely that our primary concern should be that of ensuring survival instead of massaging each other todgers with talk of promotion. Please be realistic, we are a million miles away from the top teams in our division, we need to accept that a mid-table position would be a significant achievement.

The only failure which concerns me now is our failure to compete in what will be the most difficult Championship to escape from yet. I've found, that if you think of his posts as a sort of "cry for help" they take on a tragic quality.

Almost poignant.

Can't understand all the downers on Grant.

Sure he lost his head at Wigan and rightly got sent off. His other sending off was at Milwall (I think) and that was a joke.

IObviously he is a centr back that relies on strngth mre than skill and as such, my memory is of very few suspensions.

As for penalties, again I think he has been unlucky, Forest and Milwall were both at best harsh.

I had a couple of young kids with me at Accy for the friendly, so sat on the front row of the "stand" from where I could hear most of the conversations on the pitch, and was impressed by the consant instruction and advice Gant was passing on to the rest of the defence.

GIve himn a break, he ain't perfect, but he's better than anything else we have, spent 2 years bailing out Dann!

Fair comment there Mick, he is still a young player, it a pity that Ryan Nelsen didn't stick around for a couple more years to teach Hanley how to be a real leader.

I think other posters have said it well though, if Grant is going to lead us to success this season he needs the personal discipline to avoid letting the opposition provoke him into rash decisions.

I think that's the general concensus, hes a good player and important to the team on a lot of levels. Cant imagine most strikers in the league enjoy playing against this lad, and when he does go on a run , you can see opposition midfielders looking at each other like " Im not tackling him". That's why its important he holds it together in terms of discipline. Hoping they can get Micheal Keane back from utd as well.

Should be a good season

Did you cry for three months after March 9th. At my local the one or two blues there are left have just started coming again in little dribbles

I think he could end up costing us critical points again this season unless Bowyer gets him under control. And as I said yesterday, take Hanley out of the picture through injury or, more likely, regular suspension, and what have we got as backup? Its not looking good is it.[/p]
What a worthless degenerate you are.[/p]
Yes Can we change it? No So maybe you should follow my lead and have a bit of respect for their achievements because after all we'd all love to be in their position going into a Premier League season, debts wiped out, full house every game, Sky TV money rolling in, financial security, building the club on and off the pitch, increased commercial profile, increased revenue streams, the cream of world football on display week in, week out. Hanley for me will do a job but he desperately needs an experienced CB alongside him to teach him composure and what it takes to be a club captain, someone like Scott Dann would be ideal..... hang on a minute.[/p]
There are some really obnoxious people on this site and your all of them[/p]
Sticking up for your limp-wristed boyfriend again I see. Too many Rovers players spouting off at the moment. Concentrate your efforts into the football on the pitch not tickling the ears of the press!
