Rovers ace Spurr hails Ewood new boy

TOMMY Spurr has backed former Doncaster Rovers team-mate Chris Brown to provide real competition up front at Blackburn Rovers this season.

Brown has yet to feature in pre-season because of a knee injury but Rovers boss Gary Bowyer hopes the 6ft 3in striker will be ready to make his first appearance for the club in tomorrow night’s friendly at Bury.

The 29-year-old moved to Ewood Park recently on a Bosman free transfer after opting not to sign a new deal at Doncaster following their relegation from the Championship.

Spurr played alongside Brown when the duo helped the Yorkshire side to promotion from League One 12 months earlier.

“Chris is a good mate of mine so when he said he was signing I was buzzing to have one of my mates coming here,” Spurr said.

“He’s fitted in straight away with the lads and he’ll bring a lot to us when he plays.

“He’s a massive presence for us and a different way for us to play.

“He’ll hold the ball up and obviously be an aerial threat, but he’s good with his feet as well.

“He will score goals when people can cross it like Craig Conway, Ben Marshall and Chris Taylor. It’s good to have those people in your team.

“There are two players for every position here and that’s massively healthy for training through the week when you’re trying to fight for your shirt on a Saturday.”

The form of Jordan Rhodes and Rudy Gestede last season was such that only four sides in the Championship scored more goals than Rovers’ total of 70 in 46 games.

Defensively Rovers also picked up 15 clean sheets – the seventh highest tally in the division – but there were some games where lapses at the back ultimately proved costly in their chase for a play-off place.

Perhaps most significant was a 3-3 draw at Sheffield Wednesday late in the campaign, when Rovers had led 3-1.

But Bowyer’s side finished the season unbeaten in 12 games and left back Spurr believes they can continue to get it right at both ends of the pitch this season – starting at home to Cardiff City on August 8.

Rovers have a relatively settled back four and goalkeeper, with right back Alex Baptiste potentially the only change to the regular line-up in the latter stages of the 2013/14 campaign.

“When you have a settled back four you get those relationships and know where each other are going to be,” Spurr said.

“But we don’t know what the team is going to be, we’re all fighting for places.

“I think we kept quite a lot of clean sheets last season and obviously the game that let us down was where we conceded a few goals in one game, but we weren’t a team who conceded every week.

“We said last year about consistency and we got that towards the end of the season, obviously a little bit too late but this year we’re starting afresh. Hopefully we can start right from Cardiff and go all the way through.

“When you’ve got the strikers we have, the wide players and the creative midfield players we’ve got, you’re always going to score goals.

“There’s no worry in my mind that we will cause a lot of problems for teams this year.”

Spurr featured for 45 minutes in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Bradford City in his first appearance of pre-season after a troublesome groin problem.

“I could have played a bit longer on Saturday but it was just because it was my first outing that I didn’t,” he said.

“I was just happy to get through it and feel good.

“It’s been a frustrating pre-season, picking up a groin strain the day before we actually started when I went in and did a little bit of training on my own, I struck a ball and felt it.

“But I’m lucky to be quite naturally fit anyway so I’m not going to be too far behind in terms of fitness.

“It’s just the game time and on Wednesday hopefully I can play a bit longer.”

Leeds United have become the latest club to be linked with an interest in Manchester United defender Michael Keane, who Rovers are eager to bring back to the club for a second loan spell. Cardiff are also reported to be monitoring developments.

We are certainly in a much better position squad wise at the beginning of this season than last year. Let's hope we can give it a proper go this time.

Massive inconsistency last year with players changing, serious injuries and players playing out of position, only really performed in a handful of games.

The more settled team that developed after the Christmas window looked much more comfortable and confidence was evident.

This is a stronger squad and hopefully the rotation can be managed rather than enforced.

To look at the squad that finished last season off on a high and then think that we still have that team, plus more back up/competition for places, it makes this season look very promising for us.

Win, lose or draw with Cardiff on that first game of 2014/15, I still think we should be very much in with a top 6 if not top 2 place by the end of the season.

Wish I could be at the season opener, I'll have to settle with watching it on sky sports from Lanzarote

It'll be good to hear how Brown fares against Bury, hopefully he's over his injury and will be fit and raring to go against Cardiff. The squad is definitely more balanced than it was this time last year and there's a good mix of youth and experience. Jordan Spence could also be a good addition, provided he does enough tomorrow, although I think we've still got enough quality in Jack O'Connell should Bowyer decide against offering Spence a contract.

I've just seen a photo on our official website of the players wearing the new green away kit. It's not very clear but it looks okay, although I'd rather we reverted back to red (and black) for our away strip.

I am looking forward with great excitement and anticipation to the new season, but then I always do! But really this time it looks like we are going to be in a position to challenge at or near the top end of the table all season.

I think we have a very decent squad with good competition in almost every position - but still not sure how good they can be over the full season? A lot will be down to the manager.

This is the time that Gary Bowyer really has to step-up to the mark and show his capabilities as a manager. GB has brought many good things into the club since he was appointed manager, including much needed common sense, increased stability and some pretty decent players and he got the team playing some decent football with a good team spirit near the end of last season.

But the bottom line is that we won`t go up - unless he is good enough.

I personally think that he will rise to the occasion and take us onwards and upwards to the next level, but for sure it`s going to be a interesting season watching everything unfold! Hang on to your seats...

Just got back from Ewood, probably a couple of thousand there to watch.

Pitch is lush and green, players had a good workout although Gestede went off early during the "practice" match the majority of the players looked pretty fit and raring to go, you wouldn't think that Spurr only had half a game or so in his legs.

Rhodes was awesome in shooting practice, looking to place his shots and headers wide of the keeper and probably "scoring" with around 80%.

The new away kit is gorgeous, will have to get one before the Blackpool game.

After the session all the players were great with the fans young and old alike, patient, nothing was too much trouble, Rhodes last to leave the pitch well over an hour after the meet and greet session started.

Brilliant day out and it cost nowt.

Have to say I've been reading, and contributing to, these pages for about 4 years and only in the last couple of weeks have I thought the ratio of crap to entertaining debate had actually become intolerable. The days of the 'protests' got a bit nasty at times but at least it was driven by passion, the recent stuff has just been puerile abuse.

Good to see the usernames of those who want a debate/laugh about the football dominating the thread.

They present themselves as the voices of moderation and tolerance but in fact despise any one that disagrees with them, slandering, slurring and banning g people along the way.
I hardly ever respond to the pointless and random rants of unwelcome intruders to these pages but my family are watching the film NOAH which has the dual effect of making me very bored and very angry.
Your comments regarding old nick and his cohort are ill judged and inaccurate. One does not need to despise a person to disagree with him. I disagree with YOU but I dot despise you as this would consume far too much of my valuable energy.
Please understand that it is difficult for Blackburn supporters to understand why you lot are so obsessed with our pages when we clearly don't even recognise the existence of yours. I can only assume that the lack of vocabulary, intelligence and wit restricts the capacity for intellectual debate on your own pages but judging from your own posts on here, you are clearly more comfortable on the Burnley pages than on here.
Your views are neither relevant nor welcome.
If my team had just been promoted to the Premiership, I am sure that I would be engaging in much more meaningful conversation with fellow fans than making a bit of a prat of myself on the opposition pages.
Still, I guess this just epitomises the difference between me and you. ( and before you counter that I am making a prat of myself on my own pages this is a view that only you, Dangerous David and a few other knuckle draggers would share.
Good Luck for next season. I am perfectly happy to reach out with this in the full knowledge that luck will not save you from automatic relegation.

Sorry. Today and in particular yesterday I posted under numerous identities in a p!ss poor attempt at hijacking other people's user names.

What you have seen today is the first live breakdown on this discussion forum since RobH20 was bested by Rovers F.C. a couple of months ago.

I've just had what some people refer to as a "moment of clarity"; scrolling back and reading the number of posts I made yesterday and today, when i was constantly pressing the 'refresh' button, rocking in my chair and hammering at my keyboard whilst spraying it with spittle as I furiously tried to combat the incisive put-downs from Rovers fans - i had what some refer to as an 'out of body experience' by which i mean i think i could see myself as others see me and not just people on this discussion forum either but my neighbours, people who knew me at school and the girls/women or the kids/children that smirk at mt pityingly when i go to the shop... or the women on reception at the dating agency - a slightly odd misfit who reeks of failure and loneliness.

Yesterday and today has been a cry for help. I will contact the Samaritans. I've been feeling tearful all day.

What set me off was Rovers F.C. discovering a technical glitch (which i have not been able to figure out) which allowed him to perfectly clone mine, Scamp Kingsley's and Chucky Egg's user names/identities which is why we've not been posting as much recently - it has left us stunned...

...I feel like I've had a stroke. Infact, Scampers was telling me nowadays now has trouble slurping his Bombay Bad Boy pot noddle's; his life style choices have been seriously impacted.

It unsettled me. It frustrated me. It infuriated me. That is why I've had a real time mental breakdown on these pages today pathetically, nay tragically attempting to 'clone' other peoples user names but only Rovers F.C. can do that, (how does he do it?)

Keep Darwen Green - You might have worked at Thwaitses, you might be a Darrener but Christ on a Suzuki, you are a genius. You and Ray are what i aspire to be but never will be: Intelligent, cutting and incisive. I am the poor-man's version of you, like Southport is the poor-man's Blackpool.

Rovers For Ever.

Dewch Ar Chi Gleision!
"Turbo green" officially. I quite like it for a change......
I don't mind it (although the picture isn't that clear), I just think it's best to have an away kit that polarises the home kit.

As you are some one who frequently like to take pot shots at his fellow Rovers fans i can imagine you (and that welsh windbag) have used the 'report' button frequently to ban fellow Blues.

As a Claret i would never do that to a fellow claret, no matter how embarrassed i often find them.

You, on the other hand...
SC no I haven't used it against any fellow Rovers fan or a real Burnley fan for that matter.

Fans will disagree with each other all the time, even their own fans let alone rival clubs, personally I don't mind anyone having a go at me at all but they need to realise that if they don't make a valid point that I accept they will get it back from me in spades.

And that my friend is how it should be.

The difference is if anyone wants to have a face to face discussion with me anytime over over a beer I can be found in Bar 39 in Darwen town centre every Friday night from around 9.00 pm onwards, and that includes you or any real Burnley fan.

I am more than happy to repeat to anyone's face anything I post on here and if they cant accept that then sadly that's their problem not mine.

What has been going on over recent weeks on both here and the Burnley threads is ridiculous, it was ruining it for everyone it is also illegal under the Data Protection Act.

One of the reasons I stopped posting on the Burnley threads weeks ago was I didn't like what was going on, although I haven't been able to resist a little dig tonight Preston 2 Burnley 1.

One of the reasons I stopped posting on the Burnley threads weeks ago was I didn't like what was going on, although I haven't been able to resist a little dig tonight Preston 2 Burnley 1.[/p][/quote]"...it is also illegal under the Data Protection Act." You lost all credibility with that piece of slapstick, you binge drinking bar room philosopher. Super Claret

The Cardiff game will be a good indicator of where we are. For us overseas supporters it is great that it is on TV.
Seconded, it shows that the "Report this post" button works when used correctly.
I was just wondering where the idiot was, nowhere to be seen today. There's still time though, I suppose.
There were idiots on both sides, or just as likely one playing with both hands, the troll will be back once it sorts out a new e mail address and list of ID's, so enjoy while you can.
All of us need to ignore him/them. Don't give them/him the satisfaction of spoiling good comments.

Mr Greenslaver certainly doing some dribbling today - time for a bib change!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not surprised at Dave embarrassing himself again, but being called 'snide' by our rovers troll hurling insults from behind a dingle trolls username is pretty funny.

"Turbo green" officially. I quite like it for a change......
I don't mind it (although the picture isn't that clear), I just think it's best to have an away kit that polarises the home kit.
Hey, Taffy the sheep dog, are you not going to post an essay length rant about the Away shirt like you did about the Home shirt and then a couple of hours later after you've calmed down post a reply to yourself hilariously trying to convince us that you love it really and that it was all a joke and a demonstration to your girlfriend what "trolling" is?

F*cking priceless.

Now I've cleaned up these pages this will be my last evening under this identity, as amongst other things it makes me feel dirty.

I don't need to 'convince' you of anything, lad, you've no reason to read (let alone comment on) most of the Rovers articles. You are the prime example of a troll, my missus just wouldn't accept that anybody could be so pathetic as to spend every waking moment doing what you do. I tried to prove a point but it didn't work, namely because most people know that I'm not a complete waste of life, unlike yourself. Replying to myself? It's a bit rich coming from someone who posts under multiple accounts to do exactly that, in the hope that it'll lend some credence to whatever nonsensical prophecy you're posting on that particular thread.

As for your pejorative 'Taffy the sheep dog' comment, I don't normally play along but I'll make an exception in your case. Well done, your carers must be really impressed with the originality of your quip. High sixes all round tonight, eh! But seriously, your family do realise that www.ancestry.com isn't a dating website, right?

F*cking priceless? It's better than being a f*cking penniless, work-shy drain on society. I may be going to watch my team in the 'Chumpionship' this season, but at least I'll be going to watch my team. You couldn't make it up... ;)
