Kevin Gallacher column: Three is the magic number for Rovers boss

Lancashire Telegraph: Jake Kean is one of three keepers at Blackburn Rovers Jake Kean is one of three keepers at Blackburn Rovers

GARY Bowyer will soon have three goalkeepers to choose from, and that will be a nice headache to have.

It’s great to see that Paul Robinson is getting close to a return because is a quality goalkeeper, and hopefully he won’t be hampered by the back problem any more.

Sometimes players do try to play through injuries and I know it’s been said that maybe he tried to do that early last season.

A goalkeeper has to be mobile and be able to dive and throw himself about, so if you’re protecting a back problem that’s not ideal.

There were maybe a couple of times when he moved backwards during matches and he had to think about it, but it’s hard to really know with hindsight how much the injury affected him.

Now he will be champing at the bit to play again.

Patience wears thin when you’re been out for a year like he has.

I was in the same situation myself when I was coming back from a broken leg and you play two or three reserve games and think, ‘Yes I’m ready now’.

Then you play two or three more games and you start thinking, ‘Well I was ready before’.

But the manager and the coaching staff will be watching you and maybe noticing a little limp or one or two things. It’s their job to really assess when you are ready.

Paul has played a couple of games and only the medical staff will know exactly how long he needs, but maybe he might need a couple more games yet.

He played a game and had seven days’ recovery, then after that you play a game and have five days.

Eventually you get it down to a day’s recovery and then you’re ready.

It will be a nice challenge for the manager when he has all three keepers available.

Paul’s experience will be great for the defence and that’s what he brings, although ultimately it’s about how the goalkeeper performs.

Jake Kean had a run in the side and now Simon Eastwood has got his chance, so it’s hard to know who will be third choice.

Normally you have three or four keepers and you have a young one who you send one out on loan to gain experience and see if he progresses.

Maybe they might do that here and send one of them out on loan to get games.

It’s good to hear that Rovers are trying to keep Tom Cairney at the club and that the player says he’s happy here.

I’m sure the club are trying to get something done with Hull as quickly as possible and the sooner they can get it done the better because then you get continuity of selection going into January.

I know Hull have been watching Tom, and other clubs will be watching him because he’s done well.

Although Tom likes it here, if a Premier League club came in and offered him regular football, you’d have to be tempted by that.

When you’ve got a loan player there’s always that risk that someone else can come in buy them.

But you can only play one of them Kev, and the fact that the three you have don't make one decent goalkeeper between them doesn't bode well for the rest of the season.

You know it thought don't you.

Robinson can't catch, Calamity Kean is possibly the worst goalkeeper in the Championship and Simon Eastwood is a Conference player. I expect all three are having nightmares about a certain day in March when the Clarets come to town, neither of them will want to be between the posts for that game.

I like the fact you know our third string goalkeeper (although I'm not sure which that one would be) Challenge to all Rovers fans. Name Burnley's third choice keeper. Or their third choice full back or.............. Good knowledge if a little sad. To start a grown up debate though. How would you rank our keepers ?

1) Robinson
2) Kean
3) Eastwood (only because we haven't seen much and Milwall's 2nd wasn't the best )

Within minutes of a Rovers story breaking, you're all over it like a rash. First on a Rovers story at 09.35 this morning.
So, we can only assume that the first thing you do, when you peel yourself off your soiled mattress in a morning, is go straight on the internet looking for stories about Blackburn Rovers. Proof, if any more was needed, that you LIVE and BREATH Blackburn Rovers FC. You are one sad MoFo!

You really do need to go and get professional help. There may be a cure. Then maybe you could do normal things; like getting a job? or maybe even a wife? or a life? The possibilities are endless.

Do you even know it's Christmas next week?

FAO WLUV.........

Its Christmas time
There's no need to be afraid
At Christmas time
We let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of Blackburn
We can spread a smile of joy
Put your arms around the world at Christmas time
But say a prayer
Pray for the other ones
At Christmas time
It's hard but when you're having fun
There's a world outside called Burnley
And it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing
Is them drinking Netto beer
The six fingered lot who live there
All wear Claret and Blue
Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you
Well it won't be fun in Burn-l-ey this Christmas time
The greatest gift they'll get this year is fags
They'll be smashing up their town
Fighting over a pound
Do they know they've got a League 2 ground...
(instrumental)
Here's to them
Giro-cheques for everyone
Here's to them
The inter-breeding scum
Do they know they've got a League 2 ground...
(Instrumental)
Feed the Dingles
Let them know it's Christmas time
Feed the Dingles
Let them know it's Christmas time...

I have all those things thank you kindly. I simply enjoy poking fun at you clowns and making you snap and bite like angry little puppy dogs.

And although I shall enjoy Christmas greatly I will spare a thought for you in Shadsworth tucking into your SuperNoodle Christmas dinner with a can of Strongbow and a fag. It can be a very difficult time of year when the league table is mocking you. All the best.

No and neither I suspect can the sad sack that is WLUV. He's so clearly Rovers obsessed that I'm convinced he's really a season ticket holder in the Blackburn End. However, as he lives in Bonleh he has to pretend to support West Yorkshires worst team or all the other dribbling inbreds on his council estate will set fire to his washing machine which is presently in his front 'garden'. How else do you explain the fact he posts first on the majority of Rovers articles? I for one quite enjoy his posts, they do make me chuckle and God knows, being a Rovers fan smiles are in short supply. Keep 'em coming WLUV, you're doing a public service, which is the least you can do given that as a taxpayer I'm funding your Christmas cider.

I wouldn't have known that either, but I do know that Cech plays for Chelsea. That's the thing with football people often know the players from the clubs larger than their own but rarely know players from smaller clubs. Now who plays at right back for Burnley again..........I'm sure WLUV knows that we have both Kane and Henley there.

Back on topic, do we play Robinson if he is fit. If only to put him in the shop window ?

I have no clue who their first choice goalie is either - good point you make there Keanout, about knowing players from bigger clubs.

As for Robbo: I can't see him getting back in the first team any time soon tbh. I would have thought he would need a few more under-21 games before he is sharp enough. He might be back for when we play one of the weaker teams, second week in March would be good.

I think Robinson has one more season left on his contract after this one so I expect they will want to ship him out this summer. In order to do that he surely has to play a few games.

Robbo's on big money , 30k a week , might have been worth that , when he was playing at the top of his game and we were in the premiership, our financial position he's NOT a option , we are committed to his contract term then sadly he is history.

He might be back for when we play one of the weaker teams, second week in March would be good.[/p]
I think Robinson has one more season left on his contract after this one so I expect they will want to ship him out this summer. In order to do that he surely has to play a few games.[/p]
Robbo's on big money , 30k a week , might have been worth that , when he was playing at the top of his game and we were in the premiership, our financial position he's NOT a option , we are committed to his contract term then sadly he is history. I tend to agree, he wasn't that hot for about 6 months before he had to be rested, ok we don't know how much his back was affecting him, but he certainly wasn't up to his usual high standard.

And he has been out for a long, long time.

GB is right, we would all love our best players back asap, Rochina being a good example, but bringing them back too soon could make things much worse.

I wasn't a professional sportsman but I took my sport seriously and when I was injured I always worked on the principle that for every day's training I missed it would take two days training to get my fitness back to where I wanted it to be.

I am not saying that should be the case for Rochina or Robinson, but the medical people have to be listened to.

But you can only play one of them Kev, and the fact that the three you have don't make one decent goalkeeper between them doesn't bode well for the rest of the season.

Robinson is class and put a tremendous service in for us after Brad left, injuries affected his form last year and hopefully we will see the best of Paul again. A top experienced goalie makes a huge difference to a defence and he will build their confidences up so we can stop leaking goals.I don't accept that a goalkeeper needs lots of coaxing back as if they can dive, catch and kick they are fit enough they don't have to run around the pitch like a midfielder does, get him in.
