CHRIS Taylor was the two-goal hero as Rovers beat their 10-man Championship rivals for the second time in two weeks to book their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The midfielder broke the deadlock in the fourth minute and, after a first-half floodlight failure, that was the way it stayed until 10 minutes after the restart when Johann Gudmundsson brought the Addicks level.

But within four minutes Taylor scored what proved to be the winner before the Addicks, who went down to a 2-0 defeat at Ewood Park when the teams met in the league last month, had midfielder Yoni Buyens sent off.

It was the first match that Rovers had been involved in that a referee had used vanishing spray to mark out a line for a wall to stand at free kicks.

But any fears Gary Bowyer’s much-changed side would not be up for the cup disappeared within four minutes thanks to Taylor’s first goal of the season and second for the club.

Taylor was one of six changes made by Rovers boss Bowyer to the team that started the 0-0 home draw with Middlesbrough on Sunday.

Matt Kilgallon, Adam Henley, Tom Cairney, David Dunn and Chris Brown were also brought into the starting line-up with ill captain Grant Hanley, the injured Markus Olsson, the departed Ryan Tunnicliffe, the ineligible Alex Baptiste, Jordan Rhodes and Rudy Gestede the players to drop out.

There were also tactical changes with Ben Marshall, as he had done against Boro after Olsson went off with a dead leg, starting at right-back.

And it was from one of Marshall’s crosses that led to Rovers opening the scoring in the third-round tie.

His centre found the fit-again Brown whose attempted turn and shot broke to Craig Conway.

The winger stood the ball up to the back post where Taylor planted a firm header past Neil Etheridge to send the inspirational 1,038 travelling supporters behind the goal into rapture.

With stand-in skipper Dunn revelling in only his second start of the season, Rovers popped the ball around the rain-soaked surface icely in the opening exchanges and Kilgallon, making his first appearance since October 4 after recovering from a knee injury, curled an effort straight down Etheridge’s throat before Conway warmed the Addicks goalkeeper’s hands.

Etheridge’s opposite number, Simon Eastwood, who had retained his place in the side after his heroics against Boro, endured a nervy first 45 minutes, particularly from back passes, and he was nearly beaten in the 22nd minute by Johnnie Jackson.

Shane Duffy cut out a dangerous cross and the ball broke to the Charlton captain who would have fired in instead of over had it not been for Marshall’s last-gasp challenge.

The match had to be stopped, half-an-hour in, for nearly 12 minutes when the lights went out.

When the action resumed Brown should have marked his full Rovers debut with a goal.

Cairney, operating in the centre of midfield, played a delightful pass down the line to the effervescent Conway whose cross to the back post was met by Brown.

But the summer signing, making only his third appearance for the club after a serious knee injury, headed straight at Etheridge.

Rovers survived a let-off of their before the opening period was out as Buyens’ goal-bound strike was heading on target until it hit team-mate George Tucudean and flew over.

The first opportunity of the second half went the visitors’ way as Dunn and Brown displayed dancing feet on the edge of the area to tee-up Conway who, with more time than he realised, side-footed tamely wide.

He should have done better and he was punished by Gudmundsson in the 55th minute as his sweetly struck 25-yard free kick, curled over the wall, caught Eastwood out at his near post.

But within four minutes Rovers were back in front.

Lee Williamson, who had recovered from the knock he sustained against Boro, played an incisive pass with the inside of his right foot into the channel for Brown.

The targetman, who moments earlier had a header saved one-handed by Etheridge, showed great strength to hold off his marker before turning and fizzing over a low cross to the back post.

And there was the waiting Taylor to ram home gleefully his second of the afternoon.

Tucudean then flashed a header wide.

But the home side’s hopes of getting back into the contest were damaged in the 72nd minute when Buyens was shown his second yellow card for a late challenge on Conway.

Either side of the deserved dismissal dominant Rovers tested Etheridge through Cairney, Dunn’s replacement Luke Varney and Conway.

Etheridge was beaten in the 85th minute by Cairney.

But the midfielder’s 20-yard thunderbolt, which was teed-up by Varney, smacked against the bar.

Rovers' victory means their league clash with Derby County at the iPro Stadium on January 24 will have to be rearranged as it falls on the weekend of the fourth round.
