STEVEN Defour insists he is now up to speed with life at Burnley and in the Premier League, but the Belgium midfielder has left the door open for a potential move to China.

The 28-year-old scored his second goal for the Clarets in the FA Cup win over Bristol City on Saturday, a sumptuous lob over Fabian Giefer, and afterwards admitted it had taken him time to get used to operating without the ball.

While Defour insists the physicality of the Premier League had come as no surprise to him, he said he had taken time to get used to the fact that Burnley don’t have as much possession as some of his previous clubs.

“It didn’t really surprise me,” Defour said of the Premier League’s physical style. “It was just I needed to adapt to the style of play of Burnley because in every team I played we had always the possession. There were lots of moments we could trust by just keeping the ball. In Burnley you don’t have those moments.

“That was the main thing I needed to improve and I did it.

“The training is good. I trained in similar ways in Porto. The level is good. The intensity is (similar to Porto).”

Defour has only completed 90 minutes twice for Burnley in 17 starts, in the FA Cup third round ties with Sunderland, and he has been withdrawn early in all 14 Premier League starts.

He is aware of the difference in tempo between the Premier League and the top flight in Belgium, but said he had felt settled and into a rhythm early on in his Clarets career.

“Here it never stops. It goes on and on. It’s just a different style of play actually,” he said of comparisons to the game in Belgium.

“I felt pretty good in the beginning. For me it was just a matter of time and playing games.

“I felt settled in the beginning already. I think I picked the level up pretty quickly, I played some good games in the beginning so that wasn’t so, so difficult.”

Defour’s second goal for the club was one to remember. He added: “It felt pretty good. When I made the control, I saw the goalkeeper a bit out of his goal so I thought why not?

“This is a pretty nice goal. I scored some nice goals but this one was really nicely done.”

Defour has started Burnley’s last five games in league and cup, but before that he had been benched for four successive away games after being taken off at half-time in the 4-0 defeat at West Brom.

He admitted that was a ‘difficult time’ and it led to his agent suggesting to the Belgian press that his client could make a move to China.

Defour played down any prospect of an imminent move, but asked if his long-term future lay at Turf Moor he said: “I don’t know. I can’t say I’m staying here forever and then there is a big opportunity if it’s in China or elsewhere or even in England.

“If there’s a big proposal somewhere which would be good for the club and for me then we should think about it. At this moment, there’s nothing on it.”
