BURNLEY striker Andre Gray has hailed the influence of David Jones in the Clarets midfield, ahead of Sunday’s top-of-the-table clash at home to Brighton.

In the absence of the injured Dean Marney, Jones has formed a fine partnership with new signing Joey Barton in the middle of Burnley’s midfield.

And Gray, who has scored 10 goals this season, including eight since his move to Turf Moor, believes Jones doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves.

“Anyone would want Jonah in their team,” said Burnley’s record signing. “He doesn’t lose the ball, and he’s always on the ball.”

Jones has had a hand in two of Gray’s goals this term and the frontman believes the more he and his Turf team-mates play together the more the goals will flow.

“He’s (Jones) not a player who’s going to do two step-overs and beat someone, but he’s solid for us, and he’s getting to know what kind of positions I’m going to be in as well,” added Gray. “It’s obviously shown in the last few games with the chances he’s been creating for us.

“It’s the same with Scotty (Arfield), Joey and (George) Boydy. I think that relationship is getting stronger game by game, and it always helps when we’re winning.”

Heading into Sunday’s 1.15pm clash with second place Brighton, Burnley sit just two points further back in third with Sean Dyche’s side who are unbeaten in seven games since a home defeat to Reading in September.

And Jones, who joined the Clarets following his release from Wigan, believes the arrival of Gray has given the Clarets an extra forward dimension as they seek an immediate return to the Premier League.

“Since he’s come in, he’s added a lot to the team,” said the 31-year-old of Gray.

“He’s a big threat, and for me, as a midfielder, gives you a different option.

“He’s been good. He’s a character, that’s for sure!

“He seems a confident lad and seems a bit fearless, which is showing in his performances really.

“He just goes out there. He’s fitted into our philosophy at the club, giving your all.

“He works hard and deserves his reward at the moment.”
