SEAN Dyche will be the first Burnley manager to lead the club in a match against Glasgow Rangers for more than nine decades.

It is 93 years since the sides last met, facing each other twice in the 1922-23 season — both times in friendlies.

And there were mixed fortunes for the Clarets, who were then a top-flight team, with John Haworth at the helm.

Burnley celebrated a 3-0 win in their benefit fixture for the Victoria Hospital, with goals from Bob Kelly and Joe Anderson (2). But they were beaten 2-0 in a benefit game for Alex Archibald in September, 1922.

The Clarets have played Rangers’ Glasgow rivals Celtic more recently, as the two competed in the Anglo-Scottish Cup.

The sides went head-to-head in a two-legged quarter-final, played first at Turf Moor in September 1978.

Steve Kindon scored to see Burnley take a 1-0 lead into the second leg at Parkhead, prompting an angry reaction from the travelling Celtic fans.

“When my goal went in, all hell broke loose,” Kindon said.

“I looked over my shoulder and Celtic fans had ripped down a fence, and were using the poles as spears.”

Undeterred by a terrifying experience, Kindon scored Burnley’s second goal in the away leg, their 2-1 success ensuring a 3-1 aggregate triumph.

Ian Brennan scored the other goal for the Clarets.

Burnley had overcome Preston North End and rivals Blackburn Rovers in the earlier rounds, and went on to beat Mansfield Town 8-7 on penalties after a two-legged semi-final finished 2-2 on aggregate.

The Clarets beat Oldham Athletic 4-2 in a two-legged final.
