DAVID Jones insists Burnley’s goal drought will not diminish their confidence ahead of Sunday’s trip to West Bromwich Albion – as he hopes to overcome a thigh problem to play.

Jones limped off in the closing stages of Saturday’s 0-0 draw at home to Sunderland with a minor thigh injury that is being assessed this week.

The 29-year-old hopes he can still be involved at the Hawthorns when the Clarets return to action at the weekend and insists that they will travel to the Midlands confident and aiming for victory – despite a run of five games without a goal.

Burnley have taken three points from their opening five games and slipped to 19th on Sunday when West Brom surprisingly won at Tottenham.

“Anywhere away in the Premier League is going to be tough but I know we think we’ve deserved more points from the games so far,” Jones said of the trip to the Hawthorns.

“We’re not going to fear going anywhere, so although hey will be a good team and it will be a tough battle again, we’ll approach it in the same way as previous games.

“Obviously we’re aware that we need to score goals but it’s not something we’re going to dwell on.

“We know that if you come and watch us we’ve created chances, we’ve been organised, we’ve limited chances for the opposition and there are a lot of positives to take.

“We’ll just approach the next game in the same way, looking to build on the positives from Saturday and as always trying to win.”
Asked about the injury that forced him off against Sunderland, Jones said he hoped it would not keep him out of action.

“I just felt a twinge when I kicked the ball,” he said.

“It was a little bit sore, it was towards the end of the game so you don’t know if it was a little bit of fatigue that can affect your muscles.”

Burnley are the fourth club Jones has represented in the Premier League after Derby, Wolves and Wigan.

He is relishing being back in the top flight.

“I’m just enjoying it,” he said. “You’re still learning all the time.

“We’ve had a good foundation. Three clean sheets on the bounce in the Premier League shows that we’ve got a good foundation.

“We’ve just been unfortunate. We just need a bit more cutting edge in front of goal but we’ve had chances and pressure, and the work rate was brilliant again against Sunderland.

“We finished the game well and looked fitter. We just needed a little bit of luck. I’d prefer to be building off a good foundation. With a bit more confidence and cutting edge in front of goal we’ll be doing well.”
