STEPHEN Ward is aiming to challenge for the left back position at Burnley as he prepares to make his debut at Swansea City tomorrow.
Ward completed his move from Wolverhampton Wanderers late on Friday night – after choosing Burnley instead of a switch to Brighton, where he spent last season on loan.
The Republic of Ireland international was not eligible to make his first appearance for the Clarets in Monday’s season opener against Chelsea but he is available for tomorrow’s trip to the Liberty Stadium.
He could provide competition for Ben Mee, who had a difficult Premier League debut at left back against Chelsea.
Ward is capable of playing at full back, in a wide midfield role or even in support of a lone striker.
But asked what he saw as his best position, he said: “I think predominantly left back.
“The manager wants competition everywhere.
“I think that’s what you need when you get promoted.
“It’s a very tough season and you need competition in every position and strong competition to keep everyone on their toes.
“I think he’s building a squad that's getting towards two players for every position, which is what you need because when you’re out there on that training pitch you need everyone to be on the same page.
“You can get hampered with injuries and suspensions and players need to be ready to come in, especially at this level.”
