BURNLEY crashed to a disappointing 2-0 defeat in the Championship tonight as Barnsley ran out winners in the trans-Pennine clash at Oakwell.
A first half strike from stand-in captain Jacob Butterfield and Ricardo Vaz Te's first goal for the Tykes saw off the threat of an eager Burnley side, who peppered the home goal with shots throughout the first half.
Ross Wallace had an early effort cleared off the line, with Jay Rodriguez smashing against the crossbar on his 100th appearance for the Lancashire side.
But both sides were running low on energy in the final phases on a rain-swept night at Oakwell, only the introduction of Vaz Te for a profligate Craig Davies injecting late drama into the occasion.
Vaz Te joined the Tykes as a free agent in the summer following his release by Scottish Premier League side Hibernian, and bounced back to open his goalscoring account
