ACCRINGTON Stanley’s attempts to develop the Crown Ground have been given an unexpected boost - by Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion.

The duo’s return to the Premier League at the first attempt means their parachute payments for next season are now likely to be split between all 72 Football League clubs, giving Stanley an unexpected windfall in their bid to push through a £1m stadium development.

The Reds have secured funding from the Football Foundation and the Local Enterprise Growth Initiative for the plans, which include new dressing rooms in between a redeveloped Coppice End and the Whinney Hill Terrace.

They will have to put in at least £100,000 themselves - most of which will come from the parachute payments - and Stanley benefactor Ilyas Khan is currently in the north west attempting to persuade Lancashire County Council to give the development plans the go-ahead.
