ACCRINGTON Stanley start their pre-season campaign today with only one goalkeeper in their ranks – and they remain angry at the departure of Kenny Arthur.

Last season’s back-up keeper Ian Dunbavin is expected to be in goal when Stanley take on Maidstone at Ashford’s Homelands ground, with the Reds so far drawing a blank in their attempts to bring in a new first-choice stopper.

Arthur recently shocked the club by opting to join Stanley’s former goalkeeping coach Ian Willcox at Rochdale, citing the Reds’ financial instability as the main reason.

But assistant manager Jimmy Bell said: “That’s an excuse and it left a sour taste in my mouth.

“Not once was he not paid and we looked after him when he was injured, the lot.

“We had to let the goalkeeping coach go and that maybe made a difference. Maybe Ian Willcox was in his ear.”

Stanley were told last week that Leeds would not be prepared to let young keeper Alan Martin leave until they have found a replacement, while the Reds are also tracking Tottenham Hotspur’s England under 20 international star of the future David Button.
